Talk to me about car (van) audio...

  1. Yep......

  2. 5 channel amps are available but in my experience the built in crossovers are pants and some times there is interference from the separate speaker cables. If you want to amp up the speakers and the sub I would recommend separate amps in two separate locations but as I said. The acoustics in a van aren't the best so you could spend a fortune buying loads of equipment only to find it doesn't fulfil your expectations so I would say speakers of the stereo and sub off the amp. Set it up right and you'll have audio that sounds great without the massive outlay. Also different sub amp pairings can sound different. I had a sub on an expensive amp that sounded crap. Then swapped it for a cheap emenance amp of the same power and it was awesome. Try not to get bogged down in the equipment side of things. Buy half decent stuff and spend time setting it up right and you'll be more than happy

Horses for courses mr icepug, mines 10" in a 0.8 cu ft fully sealed box randomly designed to fit in a space under the bench seat in what was the walkway. It sounds the dogs without distortion. I'm not saying it couldn't be better but for the size and shape of the whole thing I'm well chuffed, but for me there's always going to be compromise in the name of maximising useful camping storage space. A pair of subs, a propex and a consumer unit under the bed and your biggest space is full.

  5. Just goes to show you that it's not an exact science which is frustrating when you spend time money and effort trying to get it right the first time. Just worked out your .8 cu and that's tiny. Is it silicone sealed jointed or not because some times sloppy boxes can work better as they 'grab' some cu from out side the box providing its not as gappy as some pikeys dentures that is!

Blokey in shop who could have been Graham Nortons twin brother told me I had two choices - spend ages messing with port lengths and dia's or go with the current thinking - 0.8m for 10" or 1.0 for 12". Laughable really. It came in a ported box with the amps and I chopped it up to make it fit in the bus.

I once owned an Altec lansing 15" Reflex bass bin. It was 5ft high, 4ft wide and 3ft deep. The top half was like a horn with a single 200W speaker pointing through a brick sized slot, the bottom half had two 4" vertical slots. It shook buildings. DEEEEEEEEP!!!! Too big for the van though...

  7. Just been thinking about the sub and amp pairing issue and don't use this theory when buying speakers. You want to buy speakers that are more powerful than the head unit (if your going this way)
