Taking the wheels off.

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Kkkaty, Jun 25, 2017.

  1. I want to take all four wheels off to get them degrunged and painted. But how do I safely hold up the bus? Axle stands? I worry that the inevitable rocking from taking off a wheel will knock the stands over.
Or do you do it two by two?
    Thanks.

All 4 corners on stands isn't a problem. Just bare it in mind when you lift each corner.

If you reckon a quake is coming I'd suggest lower a corner or 2!

Just loosen the nuts slightly to take the tension off with the wheels on the ground, then Jack it up and get all 4 axle stands under before removing nuts and wheels fully. Then if you have a problem with a stand it can only drop back on its wheels!

  6. ^ this. Stands wide apart under front beam and rear torsion tubes, it'll be solid as a rock.

Or...before you go the whole hog, amaze your friends with the Bay's party-piece. Jack one corner up, take one front wheel off, then lower the jack. A Bay will actually stand on three wheels  . Note: do not attempt to drive it in this condition.

  7. Thanks all. I'll get the stands you recommended a few months back @snotty

  8. They're really good. Nice and sturdy

  9. If you have a decent trolley jack you can get front or rear off the deck in one go which might make it a bit easier too

  10. What is also important is what ground the stands are on, concrete/block paving no problem, tarmac, gravel, earth can have the stands sink into it over a period..

    Is that any three wheels?

  12. I've only tried the fronts. Feel free to experiment ;)...

  17. when i sent my wheels for powder coating it was jacked up front then back with all the nuts loose and put on stands. it was like that for a week on a sloping drive and it didn't have a problem...............

  19. I've learnt my lesson. Brain fade...

  20. The other Bay party-piece is to jack the back wheels up, stick it in neutral and start the engine. The back wheels go round :).
