Taking out tinware and replacing without removing t4 engine

  1. There was some debate recently as to whether it was feasible to remove /replace tinware on a t4 without dropping the engine. Whether having twin carbs makes any difference I'm not sure but I removed carbs and manifolds first anyway and the dizzie as it was fouling the tinware. All screws easy to get at in the engine bay and then there's the two each side underneath. Main prob was those two screws underneath on the left hand side. I found it easier to get at them having taken the heater tube and elbow out but they were still a bit tricky - used a right angle screwdriver on 'em! Getting things back together again was fairly simple as well but trying to line up all the holes to replace those two awkward screws underneath on the left was a bit of a nightmare - not made any easier by lying on my back under the van whilst it was on the ground! Perseverance did the trick.

So it can be done but I guess it would be a whole lot easier if the engine was out and the bus was up on ramps!!

You have to weigh up what you're up for. I have a bad back and doing it in situ would have been a nightmare. I'd have lowered the engine/gearbox just to get at those awkward screws. lol It only takes 1/2 hour. Sometimes if you bite the bullet you can save a lot of buggering about.

I've been there - under the van on my drive trying to get those particular rusty screws out. I managed, but never again.

  3. Yep, I think you're right. Not sure I'd do it again but then again not sure I fancy taking the engine out either!! Let's hope I don't have to do either! Paying someone else to do it sounds far more attractive!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You can hinge it down on the front gearbox mount by undoing just 6 nuts and bolts and the plastic oil filler. ;)
