tail gate lock

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by robmich, Oct 4, 2018.

  1. Hi All some years ago I think I saw somebody on this site did a modification to allow the tail gate to be opened from inside would like to know how it was done as I am thinking of doing the same any pics would be great
    thanks

  2. Take off the tailgate trim and look inside. You’ll see the lever that needs flipping. Tie a bit of string to it ;)

  3. I posted something years ago involving strong string but the thread led to someone actually fitting a proper handle ( fiesta ?)
    which looked factory !
Pop off the card and you'll see the lever that needs pulling ..

  4. I also want an interior opener for my tailgate. Think I could use a cabin door fitting? Did you find your old thread, @Lasty ?

  5. The lock has failed on mine, the key fits into the barrel, but just spins round, so I'm assuming something is missing - anyone got any diagrams of what the lock and latch assembly consists of?

  6. It was @Birdie he doesn’t come on any more , think the thread and pics got lost , good idea to have internal latch thou fa those early morning airings without having to get out of bed

  7. Remind me to ask you about this at techenders. :)

  8. Ok, well I bought a fiesta handle. I'm going to try it out. I will maybe report back in 17 months or so if I get it working.

  9. Please do. Theres a thread on the Samba about this but their final solution was an, admittedly neat, loop of cord to activate the latch from the inside.

  10. I don't believe there are posts anywhere unless links prove it

Or maybe... Do you have a link?

  12. This is timely! Was looking at my unlined tailgate the other day thinking I'd like to out something in place to open from the inside! The mech is ridiculously simple, all down to how much effort you want to put into making the solution pretty

  14. Thanks for the links guys...

This looks very promising. I think I just managed to upload photos of the fiesta handle I bought for the job. I suspect what I need to do is like in those samba links with the wire, but instead of the loop on the end, use a ferrule (might not be correct word but I mean a small metal barrel that will fit in the handle there? Anyone got a better word?) [IMG][IMG]

Would a bicyle brake cable work in the notch on the top pic? Not sure if the barrel end would be wide enough. If not Ford should do a cable as it's their lock - just thinkin of what might be at hand to test with.

Local bike shop should have different sizes of barrels

It’s been a while but I think those handles have a special cable thingy bit which is clipped in as part of the other bit, hard to explain exactly but the back of the handle has a thing that clips into it and it holds the cable bit, which isn’t exactly a cable bit

  20. Well that makes perfect sense
