Switching from injection to carbs on a 2.0l Type 4...what's best?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Superscally, Aug 10, 2011.

  1. Hi guys, good to be back after the apocalypse...
My 2.0l bay is running like a bag of nails at the moment and had a guys who knows his aircooled/injections has identified the injection system and a multitude of air leaks as the main problem and has recommended switching to carbs and I was wondering what ones would be best? My main aim is fuel economy, but not saying no to a bit of power either! What would you guys recommend and how much would you say they should cost? I've currently got a 009 in, but have a new vacuum unit ready to go in if this would suit the carbs better?
    Cheers
    Rob

  3. Not giving advice as there are far cleverer people on here for that, just wanted to say hello and welcome to the forum.

  4. Cheers dude, more of a welcome back, but I was still a bit of a noob when the old one perished, so welcomes are more than errr....welcome! :D

I ditched my AFC FI for CB carbs from coolair. Not had a spot of trouble from them and they can return good gas mileage if driven sensibly. I can manage 23mpg On good days or 20 on normal days. 17 if l floor it. These are in keeping with what the FI systems figures.

They are also quiet too because they are not too large.

Have you checked all of the vacuum hoses as they can cause endless problems unless they are changed...on Type2.com there is a full breakdown of hose lengths, diameters and where they are routed.

We changed ours thoroughly and it runs great although we have got a pair of Solex's to fit in the future, when problems do arise

  7. I am running twin Webber 40s and they sound and run sweet!
I can also say if the twin Solexs are working fine (no air leaks) they are also fantastic but dont sound as nice but are a great cost effective carb

  8. Forgot to mention MPG on webbers is 21 economical driving.
When my Solex leaked I got 11!

  9. How about some Italian Weber 44 IDF carbs with CB Performance fittings, will haul your bus along nicely...

    I have a pair for sale ;D
