I got the van out today reversed lovely then put into 1st gear had to force in a bit started driving went for 2nd but gearstick stuck firmly in 1st gear cant even get neutral any ideas
Bracket holding front of shift rod broken Shift plate broken (you might see from under while you have the belly pan off). The socket on the bit in the gearbox nosecone the hockey stick locates into broken.
First 2 a doddle, last one more time consuming but least likely. Take the belly pan off and have a look - if you're unfamiliar, get someone to waggle the gearlever and you may see what's happening.
had engine out today with gearbox when opened nosecone up one of the 3 blocks the bar runs through was up and wouldnt pass through managed to free it and seem to find all gears but was this just bad luck or is it likely to happen again
no pics but there is a hockey type end bit which hooks into a rod which runs back and fourth but 1 of the bits it passes through was up slightly
Different ones go up and down to change gear... That must have been first you moved as it was stuck in first. I'm going to guess this will happen again as you haven't found a cause yet...
cant find a cause really annoying do i gamble on box and hope was one off? if i put back does it mean engine out again or is there an easier way
It's easier to take out/install engine/gearbox as a unit if you know the gearbox is coming out anyway...
this sounds like one of the selector detents in the selector shaft( in the main part of the box) have jammed its not unusual and can be a bit of grit, bad luck a dodgy spring( unlikely as that usually causes dropping out of gear) chances are it will be fine, i would have to have a look/ think as you can usually access the balls and springs without removing the gearbox, had it a few years ago, i had a renault 5gt turbo for 3 years not a single problem, sold it to a friend no problem for a couple of years. i borrowed it for a weekend drove around etc drove home all fine, come to get in it to drive away in the morning and it would only go into 5th, feeling like it was my fault i pulled the box and stripped it down, there was nothing to see, as i was stripping it the selector freed off but i continued to strip it. myself and one of the other mechanics couldnt see anything wrong with it so i put it back, 10 years later its still 100% fine , if its a 1600 box they are pretty cheap used and fairly easy to fix if you can get some pictures of the box it would be handy
