Strange Gearbox weirdness.

  1. Check the clucth cable first, I know you say it OK but it may stretched just enough to not work correctly

  2. So if drive to one side has failed (for whatever reason) then there will be no drive at all? This is a result of the diff right? I'd expect some grumbling from the van if something has failed but It'd be great if it were something external to the gearbox :)

  3. I'll give it a look but I can change gear without dipping the clutch with the engine running.

It'd be great if it was!

The only spring for clutch is the one on the box arm and the clutch itself. I would have thought if the clutch itself, cable, operating arms had somehow jammed the pedal would have settled noticeably lower.

I bet its the gearbox nosecone coupler fallen apart and the box is almost in second fourth or reverse gear.

  6. That`s bang on - but if the diffs gone south it`ll be a recon / 2nd hand box .

Hope it`s an easy fix ...

While in gear, or while changing gear?

Do not take it to bits until you check the nose cone coupling
    I very nearly got caught..

  9. Hmm. No idea! I was in automatic pilot. I stopped at the roundabout and then put it into first and went to pull away....and didn't :)

Changing gear then. When you say it goes in all the gears, - does it feel like there's still the same clear (as it ever was) H pattern?

  11. That sounds promising. I'm pulling the engine and box on Saturday so we'll see. Cheers!

  12. I have a spare (but noisy) box which can be a parts donor if need be. Any tips for replacing it? Ta!

  13. Feels as normal as ever. I'm liking the idea of it being between gears. It feels like I'm trying to pull away in neutral.

  14. Actually do you mean the gear linkage coupling or something within the nose cone?

Afraid it's unlikely to be nosecone or linkage then - the H pattern comes from slidy bit in the nose cone locking in and out of, and pressing and pulling levers further inside the box. Sounds like that's all working.

  16. just change the worn out clutch

  17. Time will tell :)

  19. Sorted :)

First chance I've had to get under the van this morning. CV hanging loose. One bolt had sheared, couple lost. Bolt was flush so quick blast with the welder and a nut, some new bolts I already had 'in stock' and sorted. CV none the worse for the experience.

Just need to get a new spreader plate as it's AWOL.

Thsnks for all the replies. Isn't it nice when it's something relatively straightforward. :)

i was ging to ask if there was a drive shaft thrashing about, but I thought - no, he'll be insulted as that would be sooooo obvious.
