Stopping flash rust occuring

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Zebedee, Nov 20, 2015.

  1. Even working in the garage i'm getting flash rust coming through aerosol primer within a couple of days. Temperature is low and humidity is nearly 100% as its rained since pretty much the start of November up here. :(
Garage has no heating and as theres no electric in it at the moment i'm using a 15m extension cable to run the essentials off of.

Can i get away with just spraying a couple of coats of cheap aerosol gloss black over the primer to keep the rust at bay or do i need to use another type of primer? Or am i just fighting a loosing battle and am gonna have to bare metal everything again in the warmer weather?

  2. I thought you used zinc bonda primer. then add a light normal primer and should be fine. I'm in the same boat as you but no rust coming through.

  3. Zinc bonda is £15 per 1/2 ltr so out of my price range unfortunately.

  4. I got mine off fleabay at £2o a ltr and it'll go along way

  5. If its sitting for some time before top coat then your current primer is pointless IMO.

Bonda is expensive same with Epoxy 121 but the results are a real plus.

To stop flashing you will need some non-porous primer, metal paint from an agricultural supplier will keep rust at bay (large tin lower price per litre ) - might take more time to get a finish on later but will keep the rust off !

  6. I've used Bilt-Hamber Electrox with good results.

  8. Nooooooo
    It promotes rust

Paint it with a rust converter. I did all mine underneath with por15 metal ready, then por15 paint and left it 5 years in a cold workshop.
On the panels where I bothered to paint with rust converter before zinc primer, no rust. Where I didn't it came though what filler I'd put on and I had to hack it back off again.

  10. So is zinc bonda primer like red oxide but non porous? Can you just use it brushed straight from the tin as it looks like epoxy primers need mixng with an additive/activator making them less useful just to quickly cover a few patched panels

  11. If it's to just cover some patches quickly and your going to remove it later the just brush some top coat on and leave it till you do some more work

  12. Not got any topcoat yet. Still unsure about what colour to go with.
It's on my bugs restoration. Been years so far, working my way around replacing rot.

  13. I have plenty of bare metal exposed currently, but all wiped with some of the phos kleen stuff from rustbuster, which is esentially pshosphoric acid like the rust converters. You would probably have to neutralise before priming so may not cure your problem, but you may actually be better leaving it bare with this and then priming and painting quickly. Otherwise I would use Jotun penguard HB, which I believe is epoxy 421 equivalent but cheaper.

  14. I'd get a heater...:hattip:

I bought a 1 litre of anti rust paint off aldi..cost about a fiver..painted few rusty bits on my bug just for testing it..did it few weeks ago and still looks fine!..no rust comming through and I use my bug daily in all weathers!..so I can recommend it as a quick anti rust solution before proper painting :)

  16. Never seen that for sale in our small Aldi. Maybe its just big stores?
Garage is running from a 15m extension cable from socket in the shed that runs the boiler. If i plug a heater in it blows the fuse so not an option unfortunately. :(

  17. I use clear 85% phosphoric acid for any rust, brush on leave and wipe over then zinc bonda over it. no problems with it reacting. you do have to be careful with some paints as it can soften them..

  20. Would love one. I found a converted gas bottle that someone had turned into one on the beach a couple of days ago but someone had done a dump in it. [IMG]
