Stop rust in my gutters

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by DriftingBear, Apr 12, 2013.

  1. Hi all - I'm going to treat my gutters to some tlc to stop any rust that may develop. What's the best way to do this? Waxoyl? I'm sure I read somewhere on here about filling them with Vaseline?! My van lives outside so need to protect it as much as possible. Thanks :)

  2. If there's nothing wrong with them, I wouldn't do anything. If the paint is good just keep it clean and polished. Waxoyl or Vaseline will just trap dirt and stop them draining properly. Much, much more important IMHO is to waxoyl the roof frame from inside the van. Do it in summer on a hot day and pump loads in between the skin and frame and consider drilling some holes behind the top locker which will allow you to waxoyl between the two layers of the frame. I'll try to find a pic to show what I mean.
Edit. I should have mentioned that gutter rot usually starts under the skin in the frame. There are three layers of metal that are spot-welded together.

  3. Get a breathable cover. Saves a lot of dosh in future repairs for the price

  4. Thanks both.

Brother - I'll take your advice about the waxoyl, and pics would be great if you have them.

Pony - I've contemplated getting a cover but read lots of for and against views on here about trapping moisture etc... so I'm still undecided!

This is how they look now - should I be worried about the little spots?

  5. Blimey I've seen much worse than that! My last van had really bad rust on the nearside gutter and rear corners. The waxoyl idea is a great one to prevent inside-out rust. I didn't know you could get covers - but sounds a neat idea. For those bit's I'd sand back and paint inside the gutter with a rustproof paint.

  6. Mate TRUST ME they are fine!!

  7. There some of the tidiest gutters ive seen dude
Id clean them with some autoglym super resin which is a cleaner and protective wax
Then keep an eye on it every now and then
It would be a good idea however to have them sprayed with cavity wax from inside the bus
As your bus is a dry import id reccomend getting all the cavitys waxed and some sort of underseal applied underneath
    Sooner rather than later

Seconded (or thirded) we bought the JK deluxe one & its excellent, no signs of moisture on the van, it came recommended to me & I'll extend that

your gutters look good, I'd gently rub them back, zinc etch prime them, get some colour sprayed on & stop worrying for a couple of years - ours are much worse!

  9. Thanks for all the replies, some great advice that I will take on board. Good to know they are in good nick, hopefully I can keep them that way!

Will have a look at the JK deluxe cover too, trying to save up to get the underseal done!

JK did have that sale on - I'd drop Josh a note & see what he'll do!!

  11. I think the cover referred to is a full bus cover

  12. Ha ha. Only read it quickly. On that point tho I had what was described as a breathable cover for my last bay and I'm convinced it trapped more moisture / condensation causing the rust to accelerate that year. I'd definitely go for a superior version if I get another. (It wasn't a JK one btw)

  13. Another vote for the JK cover but to be fair we do get some decent wind here (snigger snigger) so the air always seems to get around the van. It also stops the pigeon s*** !

  14. Look slike I'll be making a purchase from JK later! Then I'll have to sort out putting some kind of window in it so the parking police can see my residents permit...
