Dark evening and needing it on the road the next day I’m afraid. Was many moons ago and not to be repeated that’s for sure! It’s a lot of work made by a simple lack of care!
Cylinders spacers are a different size (smaller diameter) so if it was in the head, it was a head gasket. VW deleted these and replaced them with spacers between the cylinder and the crankcase. So, next question, were all the spacers fitted or left out to increase the CR?
The head gaskets are not fitted but the cylinder/crankase spacers are. The rogue head gasket was left in by mistake, i thought they were all out but one got away by hiding itself well.
I took the bus out for a few miles today and to be fair it drives pretty well, it feels quicker than it ever has done and pulls strongly once the revs are up. It still only idles on 3 cylinders and its a bit slower on initial take up (it's an auto), but once it's rolling it's fine. When I drove back from TE on 3 cylinders due to the flattened cam lobe it struggled to get going and anything over 35mph was a battle so I'm confident that it's on all 4. I think I'll change the carbs which hopefully will make it idle properly.
