Stereo help.

  1. My next job is to wire up some sounds.
I've picked up an amp and speaker system from a Range Rover Sport but of course no instructions.

I'm guessing from bottom to top the wires are......

    Red live
    Black negative
Green and white speakers but not sure which ones bass/tweeters etc.
Black- red/black/white with foil shield ?
    Yellow?

I only want to connect it to a regular head unit so hoping that I won't need all of them.

    It's branded harman/kardon logic 7

  2. Most head units get the signal to an amp through RCA (red and white phono connection) leads - I'm not sure how you'll integrate that with the stereo?

The fun is any data connections to the head unit : without a matched head unit providing control signals to the digital signal processor inside that amp , I believe that lovely amplifier is a brick .

You almost certainly could hack it and make it produce sound, but buying a generic £100 head unit in Halfords may well have 4x55w outputs direct off the back of the unit, which you just wire up to speakers.

  4. A Range rover forum may help you
or contact harman/kadron for a wiring diagram

  5. @mikedjames I think you could be right. Been messing this afternoon but with no joy so far. It did come with 9 speakers so hopefully it could still be 40 quid well spent.

I think, scanning the forums talking about this kit, they are all going on about how swapping from one model to a better model of H/K amplifier the head unit recognises it and recalibrates the speaker system.
Using some clever test signals to match the installation in its new home in their Mercedes or other high end vehicle .
A menu appears on the head unit.
So it talks to the head unit to tell it about itself.

Which probably means it needs to be told what to do by the head unit as well.

It may be useful as a set of amplifiers in a box if you go inside with a sharp knife and some capacitors and screened wires and find the right places to cut, provided it doesnt need a special message from the head unit just to turn on.

But really, the best use for it is probably back in a Merc or Range Rover where they do seem to go wrong occasionally, and maybe get back a lot more than £40 f0r it.
