Hi all, really want to change my steering wheel from the 2 pence piece sized racing to an original. Problem is my t2 apparently is a crossover 72/73 model, just campers and VW heritage can't really help, they said it could be a specific wheel for that crossover year and that the 21mm splined wheels they usually sell ( both out of stock anyway ) may still not fit. Anyone have or has had this issue?
We are out of stock and not due anytime soon, The steering wheels were the same from 68 to 74.5 so upto Chassis number 214 216 4059. Hope this helps, Cheers Alex
You will need an early wheel for a 72 crossover year. mid 74 on went to later wheels. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vw-Late-B...ervan_Caravan_Accessories&hash=item417b81a843
early wheel - slimmer spokes. Later wheel. Usually padded and has thicker spokes. Can't remember the spline sizes but pretty sure later are smaller?
The spline size is - 21mm 68 - 74 . 17mm 74-79. So a early wheel is the right one, have you actually married one up yet or even measured?
My wheel is currently off at the moment as I tried to fit a later wheel which is too small. The description for the wheel on eBay states splined hole is 17mm so either this guy has measured it wrong or it's a 17mm splined hole. Maybe I will email him to check
I had this problem, mine's a 74, but must be an early 74, I fitted a mountney wheel and boss,it was the boss which caused me hassle, just measured my splines on the original wheel and its 21mm. sorry this doesn't help your prob but highlights the fact it's over a couple of years, I had problem with seat bases too but we will.leave that for another day.
This is why I drum on about the 72/73 model - It can be frustrating ordering bits that fit. some things like the seat runners and steering wheel go on a bit later too. has you rightly say.
Also the guy at VW heritage said that an early wheel with a 21mm diam may still not fit due to the steering column could also be different on this crossover year , this only adds to the problem.
MCJ do boss options to suit, but pricey. Coolair do a suitable Moto-Lita boss as well, but also expensive so might as well go for the MCJ.
I'm thinking about changing the steering wheel in my Viking from a standard one to a smaller one, for space saving reasons, out of interest are you changing it to go back to the original or don't people recommend a smaller one?
A smaller wheel gives you less leverage and makes parking and slow traffic steering much tougher on the arms.
