  1. hi guys i have aquired a narrowed beam for my 75. It is lhd and i am going to move the servo plate over. But what i want to know is do i actually need the steering damper just aant to save time but only moving the servo mount and not both. Is there any reason why i cant leave it off cheers

Having driven one without a damper I would say you definitely do need one! Bump steer is horrible without one.

  3. Would seem pointless to go to all that work of swopping beam and servo plate NOT to do damper as well

  4. Hi Ginger, When you move the servo bracket be careful to control the heat so as to avoid damage to plastic bushes the inner torsion needle bearing are fitted to. There is more data and a piccie on my Lottie restro thread page 4 and I would have added an extract here if I could only figure out how to copy across a 'pink box' any ideas?

I'd have thought you'd need one.
VW wouldn't have bothered if it was unnecessary.

As you have gone for a narrow beam I would think you need all the help you can so I would fit it.

  7. Definitely. when I fitted a new one the difference was very noticeable. Much more control and less drift.

You can leave the damper where it is and just move the servo bracket

Brazil Brake Servo Bracket I have been prepping a lot of runninggear bits ready for a bead blasting session and wanted to get this bracket made to blast as well as the donor sheet of 3mm steel has been skulking around the garage for a while. Many thanks to PanEuroPaul for letting me take measurements from "Desmond" and Ithought it worth sharing my diagram of a bracket for the 91x56 stud spacing on the Varga servo:[IMG]
Here is a picture of the bracket offered up to the beam, the red arrows indicate what I believe to be the locating dimples for nylon bushes which support the torsion arm needle roller bearings. The Bentley manual warns thatthey are no longer available, so welding heat must be controlled to avoid damage. I plan to drill a couple of holes in each of the curved flanges and away from thedimples so that I can plug weld as well as seam weld in the normal places. I figure plug welds in shear will make up for any light welds near the bushes. Grateful for anyviews on bkt position, welding/bearings etc from those in the know. Finished piccies later.
