Steering coupling...again!

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Clubs, Apr 12, 2024.

  1. Looking to do a bit of cleaning and painting the bottom of the front floor before refitting the pedal cover.
Have good accelerator cable and good clutch cable, but steering coupling looks a bit crusty. Read the discussions and seems some are a bit shonky.
I have dismissed some of the super cheap offerings and have come to these three offerings... TBH one looks like a piece of conveyor from a rock crushing plant with holes punched in it!
Anyone give me an opinion on which coupling to get? Screenshot_2024-04-12-21-48-15-643_1.jpeg large_S02300_617367.jpeg 030040009-1.jpg

    From an earlier post……

“I missed out on the group buy for the Lares 209 coupler organised by @@Ian Bell . ( didn’t see it )
But ordered one direct from USA. Total cost £36.42 . Arrived within 5 days”

Put in a search on the forum under “ coupler” and this should help.

  3. Thanks Huyrob. I have one on order from Rock Auto. That Lares 209 looks more like the material and construction I would expect.

  4. You’ve both ordered a belt-er Fitted last month and it’s night and day compared to the previous offering, very minimal flexing

The Lares one TBH also looks like its cut from conveyor belt. Nothing wrong with that providing the reinforcement is synthetic fibre and not steel. (Random shorts toot toot)

The closer it is to a complete circle, the more reinforcement and rubber will be in play.

My next coupler will be a circle of conveyor belt with 4 pieces of steel sleeving pushed into the holes to work with washers to push and pull on the rubber.

  6. That's way better looking, thicker and looks properly fibre reinforced.
The last pic I added looks really like conveyor belt.
I wouldn't use the first two because they look just like rubber.

Well, made a bit of a mistake. I’ve got Litesteer and rang Neil at Litesteer to see if there were any issues to bear in mind when installing the Lares 209 coupler.
Told that he doesn’t use a coupler so there isn’t one ! ( initially he had difficulty sourcing decent ones so bolted direct )
So if anybody is interested I’ve got a brand new boxed 209 which cost me £36.42. Can bring to TE or post at cost
    What a dope is me.:(

Does the litesteer use the steering box? How does it connect to it?

Instead of the coupler and fittings on top of the steering box and on the end of the column there's a UJ.

  13. Had my Lares coupler fitted for more than a year now, it's great. I don't get random toots.

  14. i would check the horn wire thats attached to it is actually crimped tho ... mine was loose

I also ordered a couple to keep the cost down so i also have a spare

I thought the coupler acts like a form of shock absorber, or is it more a simple cost saving device over a UJ?

I'm not pro or anti couplers - plenty of old cars use something similar on their drivesahfts!

I think you are right Moons it does help with a bit of shock absorbing ...it's bound too .
Seem to remember they could be used on trucks on transfer boxes ...back in the 70's mind .
Think they are called Layrub Couplings .
