Steering box refurb

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by fat sam, May 16, 2013.

  1. Hi all, does anyone know of anywhere that will refurb a steering box or of anywhere that sells them at sensible prices?

  2. From what others have said on here refurbs just have new seals, painted, and adjustment. Whats wrong with yours?

  3. I have a loud clicking noise coming from it when steering wheel is rocked from side to side, more so to the left. All othr steering parts are fine, it is defo the box.

  4. Recent thread on here - have a search...

  5. Anyone?

The refurbs you can buy have innards made of cheese. They're crap.
Do a search, there's a thread showing you how to do it yourself.

  7. ^this. Do it yourself - it'll put hairs on your chest :)

As Baysearcher says, refurbs are made of Wendsleydale, with a coat of paint on. For £400.

  8. While we're on this subject. Are they filled with grease or oil? My 74 bus steering box drips from time to time.

So replace the seals for about £1.50 each. ;)
Read the sizes off the old ones to avoid scene tax. They're known as rotating shaft seals and available anywhere via google. Any old ones will do, they don't exactly whizz round and get hot or anything.

Oil, not grease is correct. Grease traps dirt, oil lets it sink out of harms way.

  10. Thanks for this Zed. Autumn job I reckon after my main trip.

  11. Thanks people but would any of you know what would cause this loud clicking sound. I have topped up the oil which was full anyway and tightened the adjuster slightly, but there is no play on the drop arm when in centre possition (drag link detatched) but turn wheel to the left or right and there is play on drop arm, so if i tightened adjuster so no play is at either end it just makes it very tight in middle possition, almost jamming up so to speak.

It's supposed to be tighter in the middle. In the olden days they were made same throughout the range but as the wear occurs more in the middle and was then adjusted out it caused wheels to jam while cornering and accidents followed.

Clicking sounds like maybe an internal bearing on it's way out, but I'm only guessing.

  13. Don't think you'll know unless you have the box apart.

Don't adjust all the play out in the fully left or right position. There's meant to be a lot of play at full lock. If you adjust it out, the steering may jam
