Steering box, Hypoid oil

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Majorhangover, Sep 5, 2011.

  1. Which hypoid oil do i need for my steering box? Neither Bentley nor Haynes state which one, and from reading on the interweb there are different types GL or EP and then different ratings for these ???

Ep is supposed to have something in it which corrods yellow metals, is there any brass Etc in The steering box?

Any pointers would be good and much appreciated.

  2. 80w90 GL4 - same as gearbox.
does say this in the haynes manual somewhere.
i've used it and perfectly ok, cheers.

  3. Thanks Mate, I've just found its written on the bag it came in too, its in portugese but fortunalty google is fluent in portugese

    Atencao
Colocar o lubrificante com o mecanismo instalado no veiculo usar oleo SAE 90 - ep ate o Nivel do Bujao de enchimento

    Or:

    attention
Put the lubricant with the mechanism installed in the vehicle using SAE 90 oil - p to the level of filler plug

  4. As above, EP80 or 90, same as gearbox. There's no yellow metal in the steering box.

  5. Well Ive got some gearbox oil so that saves a trip to halfords :)

  6.
  7. Halfords stuff is fine. Or bog standard Castrol.

  8. i was looking at the Halfords stuff the other day but it didnt say Hypoid on it. does yours?

  10. either ep80 or ep90 will do the job with no problems :) BTW EP stands for extreme presure and its used in gearboxs so hypoid gears dont brake it down due to sheer presure. P.S. if your steering box leaks slightly use one shot landrover swivel hub grease is designed to replace the ep oil in landrover hubs if they leak and will stop your box leaking i used it in my split loads better :)

  11. Thanks 13WD Good info and handy tips :)

  12. Got 4 litres today from Halfords with my Trade card. will go for a drive and then once warm I will change the gearbox fluid.
