Starting issues. Continued.

  1. So far I have...
    Replaced
HT LEADS, plugs, coil, timing is perfect, blown out carb, new dizzy cap, new rotor arm.

Still lumpy starting or just turning over and not starting.

Only solution to this is putting foot flat to the floor (no pumping) and she burst into life and ticks over fine and drives fine.

    WHAT IS WRoNG?!?!

  2. Have you checked the choke mechanism. ,

I think the solex carb has a mechanical and electric system
Is your issue cold starting or from hot ??
From memory before start up, you press accelerator which should release the choke mech cam bringing the choke into operation.
Is it working when you do this.??
The electrical side of the mech brings the choke off when the engine warms up.
If either of these aren't working you will struggle to start the engine.
Remove the air cleaner and see what happens to choke flap and what position it's in.

  3. Problem is starting from cold most of the time. But I don't understand what having my foot to the floor would help? As I'm not pumping fuel..

  4. And adding to that yes the pressing accelerator and choke popping the stepped cam down works.

Choke issues. Check the throat is closed when you depress the accelerator once. If not it's either a lead off the side of the choke or the heating element is up the swanny.

The choke works like normal chokes. When you press the accelerator once it closes the butterfly in the neck making it richer ( mostly petrol ). When the engine warms the element on the side expands and opens the butterfly and allows it to run leaner ( more air ) if the element is up the swanny you will see the wire is connected, but the neck of the carb remains closed when it gets warm. You will have to take the air filter pipe off to see if it's operating correctly.

Check this before messing about with carb settings!

If it starts fine with your foot to the floor, then it's getting too much fuel at start, as opening the throttle leans it out. Back the choke off a little bit, and make sure the needle valve / float is doing its job and not flooding the carb.

    @Dubs has it :
If you have to put your foot to the floor without pumping for it to start that is a symptom of flooding.
Too much fuel - either the mixture is adjusted far too rich or the float mechanism is not stopping petrol feeding into the float chamber of the carburettor - check it is put together correctly after you cleaned it . Also try a new fuel metering valve - there is one in the generic stock carburettor service kit.

  9. The only odd thing is that once she's started she runs lovely. I would have thought I would have had some running issues throughout not just at startup
