Hello one and all, I have a starting issue with the engine. If i turn the engine off after a run of over an hour the engine will not start again for at least 20 - 30 mins. I have a stock 1600 engine, single carb with pancake filter, 009 pertronix electronic ignition and a hot start relay. It is timed correctly, on start up and once idled it revs at approx 900 - 1000, then after 10 mins of running its slightly higher than 1000 but then after a while it settles again to just over 900 (by the rev counter so room for error), put that in for extra information. What could the problem be and how do i rectify it. Thanks in advance
EDIT you have a relay - it has probably failed or the connections are Marmitety........ I removed and re crimped all mine two weeks ago and it works now
I have a hot start relay already fitted and my understanding is that either work or they don't. i.e. if its broke it wont start at all or have i been given miss information
I thought the same but as I say I removed my relay completely two weeks ago because it did the same as yours, I then decided that because the p/o had fitted it I would see how I went without it so I cleaned and replaced all connections etc etc and it's been perfect since - sometimes adding even more wires creates more problems.
Or hot start relay on the way out I've never got this hot start relay thing, is not the solenoid a relay of sorts anyway, so your driving one relay with another. VW didn't see the need to fit them, redoing he ends of the cables should be sufficient if there's a bad connection. Adding a relay is just masking (possibly temporarily) the original problem.
Hello L-E-F, Yes it turns the engine quite strongly doesn't struggle it just won't fire up and run. Any other time it starts as easy as my modern car.
It's because the choke resets and wants to flood it. Turn key and reasonably slowly press acc to floor and keep it there until it starts. As opposed to cold start - press once to set the choke, then start without any pedal
My twin carbs do what Zed posted. When I start the engine when it's hot it runs like a bag of old nails for a few moments until the chokes come off. That said it does always start. Also try putting your foot on the clutch peddle. You'll be surprised at how much faster the starter an turn when it's not trying to turn shafts in a gearbox.
Thanks for all the replies, We are off to alive and vdubbing this weekend which will be a long(ish) run from lincolnshire, we intend to have an old mans wee stop half way there so will put the starting procedure to the test. regards
I misunderstood your 1st post - you should have made it clearer it turned over.... for those reading this who don't know if you have a hot start problem you get lights on dash etc but no starter motor operation. carbs are for loosers anyway
Don't Worry rickyrooo1, i don't understand myself all of the time let alone converting my thoughts into the written word and putting a first post on here, you should have seen the draft (with an r) explanations before i put it in. You want to here some of the conversations i have with myself or the dam bus - now they are misunderstanding and entertaining
