Starter Relay - How Big?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Owen Snell, Jul 26, 2013.

  1. I'm having trouble with the starter relay that came with the new loom. It's 30A rated and has given up (again). Is this big enough for the job - not sure if my problem lies elsewhere (maybe dodgy solenoid pulling too many Amps) or just that the relay is too small.

  2. This is a relay switching current to the starter solenoid, yes? If so, 30A is more than enough. I'd reckon the solenoid pulls 10A max.

There isn't a relay for the starter motor itself (which would need to handle hundreds of amps). The switching's done by contacts inside the starter, closed by the solenoid.

  3. Yes, just the solenoid. Wondering why number 2 relay has crapped out.

  4. In what way has it packed up? Contacts welded?

  5. Going to find out this morning ......

  6. Dead starter. Nothing if I bridge the main terminal to the solenoid supply and a nice shower of sparks but nothing else if I bridge the 2 main terminals. *****.
