Starter "problem"

  1. Hi

I was trying to start an engine on my stand today using a new starter that i have had on the shelf for a couple of years still in the box

The starter spun but never engaged - any ideas?

  2. Have you tried activating the starter off the bell housing to see if the (forgot technically term) extends to reach the flywheel.

  3. Does the solenoid shove the pinion out?

The pinion should shoot out, then the starter should start turning.

  4. I tried it on the deck and it did once but fitted it again and it never

  5. Have you got big enough cables running to the starter.. jump leads wouldn't bench test mine very well, it just about managed a quick whir , but proper cables, as in the van sized ones and it was fine

  6. ^this. You’ll need a thick pair of jump leads to the starter +ve stud, and earth to the frame of the starter.

  7. Thanks all I'll give that a try appreciate your advise as always

Is it the right starter for the flywheel?
