No sorry I didn't explain that very well. It's the electronics that were designed to deal with that particular battery..I dunno, higher out put charge or whatever, that may lead to a fla boiling? Have no idea to be honest Snotts, dont know enough about calciums.
Good work! I expect mine will do the same when I do the same test. I wish I had, but knew no better, it was just a battery and in Halfords they are almost all Ca. I'm fairly sure it's never fully charged on the van.
According to the technical information I could find, adding calcium to a lead acid battery reduces self discharge and improves cold start. The top model Bosch batteries are calcium.. In other words you might as well use calcium batteries. If its not charging properly on the bus, thats because you arent using the bus enough - the setup is designed to sit pretty well charged , start the engine then reach pretty full charge after 15 mins driving. Not to be left draining away for months then hammered, needing several hours of driving to catch up. Your e.g. 50A alternator puts out about 20A average.. so thats an hour for 30% charge of a 65AH battery.. Use a solar or mains trickle charger ..
Just fitting the Powerlite starter. When coupling up to the housing there is about 5mm play sliding about the bolt threads when loosely fitted. The SM has enlarged holes to allow this slide about the bolts. @77 Westy @theBusmonkey So this is a self supporting SM so not the definite location of the VW bush one. So I’m guessing that I slide it as far as I can so it meshes in the flywheel and tighten here?
But that still leaves me confused as it’s sliding about the bell housing hole, so how do I locate and tighten it down knowing that it going to mesh true when I start it?
Sorry, I don't have the answer. Sounds like you got the wrong starter to me...or you need to bush the holes in the starter to centralise then... or rotate it hard in one direction, tighten the bolts and cross your fingers (not recommended!) Or perhaps the starter body will centralise in the bell housing?
Apologies, just seen this. As far as I can recall the GoWesty one just bolted right up with the only alignment being the 2 bolts and it just felt right. I'm not sure about your one. There was certainly nothing specific in the fitting instructions that suggested alignment was considered a critical consideration, so I guess I didn't consider it! If the one you have is designed for your engine then I guess the manuf would have noted any important stuff in the fitting instructions? Keen to hear what you think when it's all in Pics please...
You mean not located properly in the big circular hole? That doesn't sound right. You've only a few mm engagement in the pinion/flywheel teeth, so needs to be reasonably in the right place.
Yeah good point. Mine was a snug fit and would expect the bay one to be the same. I thought the PO was referring to movement around the centres of the locating bolts radially. Perhaps I misunderstood..
I mean it’s rotating clockwise and anti-clockwise when mated up to the bell housing. The stud holes on this motor are arched so the play is only restricted by these arched holes. when I’ve stoped and had a cup of tea, thinking about it - it doesn’t actually matter because it fits snugly and it’s simply rotating about it’s centre point which is the SM shaft. Well that’s my logic
