Whilst the engine is out i thought i'd give the sometimes sticking starter motor a look at , i've just taken it out and noticed a good amount of play in the shaft , i'm guessing this isnt great - anyone confirm one way or another ?
I'll try and get a video sorted

  2. I don't think you need to worry too much, one of the bearings is at the blank end and the other bearing is in the bell housing so once it is out it will slop all over the place.
At least that is how I understand it, if I'm wrong I'm sure I'll soon be told:)

I sort of assumed that could be the case , sounds feasible , think its time to replace it however , i reckon its the origjnal and never been replaced , all the screws holding the starter and solenoid are rusted away to virtually nothing so cant even pull it apart for further inspection / maintenance so a new or refurbished one is on the cards i reckon

  4. The flywheel end is supported by the bush in the bell housing.

If it’s working ok, why change it?

It had a habit of sticking after a run, say when stopped for fuel etc and needed a good ***** with a large adjustable kept at hand which was always a pain, envisaged whipping it out and greasing and oiling things like the solenoid but everyhing is seized solid and the heads of screws have corroded into something unuseable ...so easier and.hopefully more reliable to swap it out

  6. Sticking...how?

There’s nothing really inside to lubricate. If it’s sticking, it may be the bush, which is replaceable.

May be one or more of the windings gone open circuit, but I’d go for the bush first.

While we concentrate on the bush in the bell housing, we forget there's also one at the other end that never gets lubricated. The one I took apart, the lubricant had turned into toffee.

So I destroyed the solenoid taking it off not very carefully , this looks to have been the culprit for the intermittent refusing to work - it was full of rusty gunk.

Is it possible to replace just the solenoid ? I've had a look round and struggling to find one specific for the T2 , are they generic to the starter itself ?

If they are available , anyone any pointers as to where to start looking , in the meantime I'll keep looking

Good shout, I've an auto electrical place round the corner , doubt they're open though otherwise I'd have nipped in

Got a used solenoid locally , fitted it to the original starter ... All good
