Right!!! I have a standard solex 34 and a set of twin carbs solex h40/44 and I'm wondering which to use in my camper engine rebuild. I thinking down the fuel economy v's power??!? What's best? The rest of the build is 1641 pistons and full flo oil kit - not sure if that will help with advice???
If you're for twins (not a bad idea), I'd stick the Solexes on eBay and fit a set of Weber ICTs. Fuel consumption should be better with twin carbs. The solexes just seem overcomplicated to me.
So duel carbs are more fuel efficient? I thought they were less efficient. Also from what I read the solex are the easiest to set up.... ?
The H40's (Kadron's) will probably give you the most power, but they are renowned for being very juicy, unlike the ICT's which will increase poke and give slightly better fuel consumption if jetted properly
If your carbs are something like Kadrons, they may be ok. The Solexes I wouldn't advise fitting are the stock arrangement as on type 4 engines (sorry, I misunderstood) - I don't know what the numbers are. VW tried to be a bit too clever here, IMHO, and you'd struggle to set them up. What size venturis do your carbs have? I suspect big-uns, which aren't really suitable for a bus, where you're more interested in low-end torque rather than high-end power. A type 1 engine is very inefficient. The standard single carb on a long t-shaped manifold is pretty awful, but served its (presumed) purpose of stopping German van drivers thrashing the nuts off the engines. A dual-carb setup should reduce the inefficiencies - it just works better - so reasonable to expect an improvement in MPG, I'd say. ICTs are nothing special, but they're ok little carbs, properly jetted. Don't expect any great increase in power by going to 1641, btw.
Me also not reading properly, sorry. A single solex is easy to set up. The twins probably are as well if they're correctly jetted. The twins will be capable of using more petrol or less, depending on how you drive.
Solex H40's ARE Kad's, sactly same carbs. Whether you fit them depends on what you want, power or fuel economy. Brosol (Brazil) also make H40's
