Speedo that reads in Kilometers

  1. I imported my 1976 camper back in 1989.
At that time it past several mot inspections with its original speedo which reads in Kms.
Is it still legal like this or do I have to change the dial over to one in miles?
If I need to change it, any ideas where I might get a replacement dial.

  2. All that is required for an MOT is, I think, that if a speedometer is fitted, it is working.

Now whether the police would care, I'm not sure - I have a feeling that they would, but that stickers or an overlay showing MPH should cover that issue.

  3. The reason I am asking, is that when I imported my BMW from Germany in 2009, I had to change the Speedo dial, Headlights, and change the high intensity rear fog lights from the left to the righthand side.

Have the regulations changed between 1989 and 2009, they appear to have?

  4. When importing, vehicles first registered after 1984 have to be more compliant than older vehicles, I think.

  5. My camper went through its last mot with a kmph speedo and lhd headlamps

I had to but bits of tape over the headlamps to divert the beams but apart from that no problems

I added little stickers to indicate mph so i new how fast i was going but have now got a second hand mph speedo to fit when its comes back from paint

Im tempted to reset the clock to zero miles upon refit but im unsure if thats legal or not

  7. KMH speedo is fine for MOT.

You can do what you like to the mileometer, wind it back or forward. It only becomes a problem if you try to pass this off as genuine mileage to the next owner,,,,,,
