speedo now apart - is something missing?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by grub, Jan 26, 2013.

  1. Following on from my previous post about my speedo wording but not clocking the miles up, I have now taken my speedo apart.

I'll try and explain this as best I can so pls bear with me!..

The internal gears of the speedo (metal bit in the middle) appears to drive a plastic worm gear which looks to turn a separate plastice shaft at the side of the speedo (lets call this shaft A)- then there is a metal shaft with the plastic dials fitted onto it with the digits on for the miles (miles, tens of miles etc), HOWEVER there is nothing connecting this metals shaft to shaft A (i.e. the shaft which looks to be turned by the speedo gears has a worm screw on the end but there is no cog linking this onto the shaft to turn the miles around) - is this missing and the reason why my miles are notching up?

Any can you buy these gears separately?

Hopefully someone with a knowledge of the speedo will know what I mean - a photo of this bit or exploded diagram would be ace.

    thanks fellas

  2. Just found this..

So looks like I am missing the little white cog which goes on the end of the metal shaft that goes through the mileage dials.

Would anyone have one spare, or can u still buy them new?

  3. Your best bet is prob to buy a used speedo.

  5. This thread shows the set up and missing cog:

You can get the cogs new, but are 26 dollars, which beats the alternator boot as the most unrealistic priced part.

Hence get a cheap speedo - eBay.de (German eBay) is a good place to look.

Here is the link in case you are rich.......

  6. that's got to be the most expensive substance in the world then, $26 for a part which weight about 3 grams.

Excellent. Had a gander and mine's too moderm for your 72 bus. It has MPH and KMH on it.

I've no idea about the plastic cog. Mine's (whole speedo) from a late, late bay and the typeface and general style looks more modern. Have a go fitting the cog Mick has very kindly offered you.

  15. Thanks Mick - received and fitted and looks just the job to me.

    Very much appreciated mate. :)

  16. Superb. Glad it turned up ok :) :) :)

  17. Speedo now clocking up some miles (thanks again Mick) however now when you go more than 40 the speedo needle spins right round past 100mph and makes a horrible whirring noise - does this mean that the cable is not in the back of the speedo properly - felt like it pushed home firmly!!

As the cable can't be going round any faster it must be something in the speedo?
    Impressive effect though!

  19. Worth a photo at 100mph before you fix it :) If you need any other bits from the speedo let me know. It came from a van that the rear was burnt :( So some is a bit rusty etc. Let me know

  20. Speedo was working fine before I put Mick's cog in - can't be the cog causing it surely?

    Confused!!
