If I had my life again, I'd be an acoustics engineers, soundproofing and equalizing rooms. It's hugely complicated and very expensive. :)

I can't see, they have other components blocking the view... but I think we've settled the matter - it's a con, just not the con we originally thought. :)
But - in my case due to the original headphone socket/headphone impedance mismatch it has improved the sound. If I'd bought 300 ohm headphones instead of 80 ohm I would never have needed it.

  2. Pity. I was about to buy myself a roll-neck sweater and some oxygen-free mains cables :(

  3. Use twin and earth

Not instead of the roll neck, obvs ;)

After all that, I had another go at soldering - giving it more time to flow and hopefully solder to the board as well as the pin and it's only gone and worked!

Thanks to all for the insight and advice.

  5. Good news, can you pull the same trick with that bloody big amp next, please? ;)

  6. No! I want a mellow and open sound stage, with expressive middles. This can only be achieved by using gold-plated mains sockets.

  7. I had a punter once at a show ask me what the difference was between a gold plated fuse and a silver plated fuse. What could I say to that? I am an engineer, not a sales personage.

In the end I settled for "the difference is £5 to you, mate"....

  8. They'll buy anything. Don't hold back.

Was moved to rummage in my stash. Somewhere...somewhere...in the garage is a pair of NOS Mullard EL34s. Where did I put them?

  9. Get em on eBay, Richard. Brimar and Mullard is premium, these days

  10. ...and a NOS GZ34, somewhere.

  11. Nooooo. I'll put them to use, some day. Or lock them in the safe with my 70s CV boots.

The "EM" magic eyes are fun. Could use them as a steampunk VU meter

  12. Big money, seriously that and GZ37, worth their weight in gold, a lot of money for a full wave rectumfrier.

  13. Well, where's it gone? Somewhere there's a box with the EL34s and my stash of EF86s and ECC83s. It's vanished :(

  14. Do it, proper geeky ;)

  15. The better half will have tidied it up, such a shame :(

  16. The "better half" is a compulsive hoarder. No chance.

  17. Phew  :) it will be under something then, first available surface filing system, like what I use.

  18. Get your scope out, take a sample, and press the “FFT” button. All will be revealed…

  19. There might not be enough bit depth on a scope, the soundcard would so a better job.

There's a scope built into the DAW. And a frequency analyser and all sorts of gadgets.
I'll need to work out how to get a test tone out from the DAW through the headphone "amp" and back in again without making a feedback loop.
    I'll try later...maybe.
