Smoking at start up

  1. I have a recon'd engine in my van and although its been fitted for 6 months or so its only really done 100 miles and gets pulled in and out of my unit every day. On start up it smokes a little. Is this something to worry about or will it die down as I start to drive it more and the engine beds in? Need to change the oil too as it still the oil that came with the recon engine so will have some metal deposits in (doing this at the weekend) Cheers in advance guys

  2. Your oil control rings are not bedded it.
It needs a few good long runs at reasonable speeds to get the rings to bed in.
Just running it for a few moments a tick over does it no favours at all.
    Oil change at 500 miles.

  3. Agreed - go for a decent run and get that oil changed. Dont forget the nature of the flat four engine , where the pistons are lying flat (horizontally) the oil collects at the bottom and you will always get some burn off, its normal but in your case everything needs to be run on properly then things will settle down.
Dont worry use your van :)

  4. Thanks, that what I thought but its good to check, it getting MOT'd next week so I think I will take it for a long cruise at the weekend to help it bed in a bit. I think i will still change the oil just to be sure, i've got plenty of the stuff

    Stan likes this.
  5. If you tell your MOT man it has a new engine fitted he will understand - as long as its not puffing like a steam engine it should pass anyway

  6. ^good point

  7. As above, also to make sure they don't over rev you brand new engine. I would stay for the MOT.
