I find myself in possible need of a cheap and ecnomical car, as much as the beetle is a nice car £270 tax and 25mpg is cack, so recommendations please on cheap to tax and fuel cars. So far i'm toying with a 2001 onwards fiesta 1.4 diesel £30 a year tax 60+ mpg - had one before so i know they are ok, fusion also an option, basically a fiesta on stilts. Megane 1.5 diesel same sort of spec'. Ford ka - petrol and dearer tax but cheaper to buy. i'm up for any ideas you have? i should add it don't need to be pretty and i ain't gonna spend any more than 2k
depends how cheap - I've been looking at the VW polo 5 door hatch 1.4 - 12 plate with 14k on the clock is about £8k
thanks mabel, as i say i don't want to spend much at all, it is just for a work hack i don't even plan on washing it, my van is my thing for spending money on, the car is a tool.
Peugeot 306 1.9 D non turbo. Slightly more to tax but bomb proof engine! I've had two and my current was £300 to buy with 6 months mot just had it done again and it needed £80 to get a ticket.
i've had 3 ka's but the tax won't be £30 like a small diesel. just looking on ebay/auto trader now, some 1.4 polo diesels are £30 some aren't - must be 2 different 1.4 diesel spec's.
this one is £100 a year http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-POLO-S-1-4-TDI-/181079595090?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item2a292f5852 this one is £30 a year - both 1.4 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Volkswage...1046306?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item3f21dc9ea2

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classif...h/true/postcode/dn215nh/radius/1501?logcode=p £120 tax but group 1 insurance so should be ultra cheap. Small petrol so warms up quickly in the morning, economical if you've not got lead boots on.
For a start forget VW. They might be cheap to buy but parts are not. Plus they are generally pants after about 1998. Japanese every time. Nissan Micra (mk2 is the best compromise) Toyota starlet Suzuki Swift (early version) Yes Vauxhall Corsa and yes Ford Ka or Fiesta Sorted . Btw you can buy a bigger car for peanuts, nobody wants big Cars but they can work out cheaper than you think?
what are those skoda fabias like? i'm not a badge snob but for 2k you can get a fairly new one - the 1.2 is only a 3 cylinder though.
No idea Rick, but our current and previous motors have been toyotas, we've been pretty happy with them. I'd always lean towrds the japanese when buying a modern car.
Wife has got a Honda Jazz. Was very sceptical at first but costs bugger all to run, halved her fuel bill and is actually quite fun to drive and the rear seats fold in a way that make the whole car quite roomy.
my daily for the last 11 years has been a renault clio 1.5 DCI it's been a great little car and never let me down it needs a service every 18k miles or 2 years and that's about all i spend on it
I agree with you on quite a lot of the statements above. VW have the same reliability record as Alfa Romeo had in the 80's which is why my VW buying stops at 1996. That said if you can find one, get a Seat Arosa 1.4 Tdi. They are epic. But don't buy Japanese unless it's a mental K series car with a full blown 3 pot engine like the Diahatsu Avanzato TR-XX or such. Normal Japanese cars are so soulless. I never got excited when I drove my mothers Nissan. And think big. We sold a 1996 BMW 740i for £850. Ok not quite that cheap to run but you can never put a price on luxury unless it has a Vanden Plas base on it so buy an Allegro.
What about an electric Gwiz! ideal if you dont mind looking a *****, and dont need to do more than 40 miles each day!
