My wipers are running really slow for the first minute or so and then faster. any tips on how to fix? Can you still get new carbon bushes?
Why do you suspect its the motor - and why would new carbon bushes fix it? If it is the motor, might it be overcoming some form of friction caused by old grease etc in the linkage or take advantage of bearing surfaces expanding through heat to speed up?
Fold them off the screen Good spray of a lubricant of your choice on spindles Set them in motion That's what I do from time to time
...or take the whole mechanism out (not too difficult), unclip the wiper arm shafts and give them a good clean/lube. If they seize completely, you'll strip the the nylon cog in the motor. Unlikely to be the motor itself. Or...do a full service and stick a Mk 4 Golf motor in.
Just had exactly this last week, amazed the motor didn't burn out or at least blow the fuse. I just used some scotch pad to clean them up. Grease had seen better days so refreshed it all and cleaned the motor up.
I have doused them in WD40. Will leave them overnight. They do seem to be running more freely already. Cheers guys
You were lucky. Usually the big nylon cog strips off the wiper mech shaft. Your motor runs...but your wipers don't. Prob the most common failure.
When they slow down again in a few weeks time you'll realise it's do it properly then never again or lubricate them every few weeks. You'll crack eventually. I did!
I have a spare wiper motor assembly in the garage. I am going to completely rebuild it and then do a swap. I knew it would come in one day.
A silicone grease that is meant to be used with nylon. IE NOT standard engine lithium grease, as nylon absorbs hydrocarbons, swells up and cracks. And NOT WD40 on the nylon either for the same reason, as thats basically white spirit with a few additions, rubbish at lubrication, good at dissolving dried up grease and spreading it (making you think its lubricated) . Fairly good at keeping water off briefly.
