  1. I keep getting directed to meaningless scenic videos (not involving naked ladies).

Surely time to make this place secure?
It’s not like we’ve been banging on about it for years....

I believe Horts is going to look at it Monday. It’s certainly not anything that we’ve put in there. Maybe it’s the level of hosting we pay for. I don’t know. As for security, that’s already been spoken about. There are no end of sites that say not secure these days. We don’t hold any financial info as the site is free to use. All the providers hold is an email. Username and password.
As an aside. It’s fine on tapatalk and my iPhone browser. Maybe for now those with issues can get on via that route.
Try the obvious clearing cookies/cache and restart your browser. Got to be worth a try

Exuuse me ! The SSL thing is not only basic security, its also the intent of browser makers to gradually make it harder to access non-SSL sites like these.

And still the fact is without SSL it increases the attack surface of your clients.
If you dont want to use SSL then remove the ads so we are less exposed to the simpler attacks.
Its too common to buy an ad impression package and later discover it has been ad clicker injecting code into benign websites. SSL makes some of that harder for the evil crowd.

Mind you using xenForo with the recent hack code changes placed directly in the home page script seems to show that security might be better..

I am glad you are looking into it.

Security has been spoken about and we've been told it's not a problem. It may not be deemed a problem because of the data held but the minimum that we should be recommending to members is to make sure that their passwords are specific only to TLB.
The security certificate and 'security' aren't the same thing.

  10. That it not really good enough, user data / emails could be compromised. As also previously mentioned 3rd party ad networks are a major distributor of malware which could cause further issues for users.

Nothing to do with the level of hosting, could be something to do with how out to date the server is I also mentioned this the other day in the login issues thread.

The no end of not secure sites is a poor excuse, use a DNS service like cloudflare then. Guess what it's FREE, SSL and WAF which would mitigate the majority of issues moving forward.

Clearing cookies and cache code has been injected into the site, that's as much use as a chocolate spade.

As I said it’s being looked at on Monday. I’ll say no more on this now as I’m already bored of the negative and frankly condescending replies. The people who own and moderate this site get nothing for doing it, so rather than trying to mock, maybe offer constructive advice and support if you have the appropriate know how. It will be updated/sorted when Horts gets time to do it.

But ok I apologies for the chocolate spade.

    Thank you
It is in hand. It’s not my department so I know nothing of all that ssl rubbish I’m afraid. Please just bear with us

I do worry that one day I'll click on TLB and it'll be gone, possibly for ever with no way of contacting anybody or recovering any threads. I know nothing about forums, hosting or SSL thingies but I seem to have worked the following out:

The site software/server is out of date and the site owners only pay for the most basic of hosting packages

There is no revenue generated for the owners and therefore no incentive to upgrade and maintain

The owners have done an amazing job creating and running this site on a voluntary basis through their enthusiasm for Late Bays and have made the site what it is today and deserve all the thanks and recognition for doing so, but have maybe lost their enthusiasm.

My question to the owners, admins, mods and general members is - Has the the time come for the site to be taken over by a different group of people with the same enthusiasm that the original owners once had? I would be happy to pay a small subscription. (and I suspect most members would), in order to compensate the owners, migrate to an updated server and remove the worry about losing TLB for ever and all that comes with it.

    Thoughts anyone?

    that’s a fair point we’ll said imo.

I would be happy with putting some money into the pot to support the forum, as I’m sure would others, for me I wouldn’t want anything in return other than seeing the forum continue with better hosted, supported and backed up data.
It would be tragic if everything was lost never to return, the wealth of information TLB has is immense.

  17. The site could easily run for $5 a month, depending on the architecture and service level that we would want to offer. via a service like digital ocean. The only thing with that is it needs configuring.

Also I currently have to managed a xenoforo 2 site for the company I work for.

I would be happy to offer help with this, as long as the admins don't hate me after all my comments on this thread.

Your points are well put and I can’t disagree, so my advice is simply this.

Contact them yourself and ask them. You can do that on here by simply messaging either @Fish or @hailfrank they are the owners.

Personally I’m not interested in owning or part owning this site. TBH I don’t even think Id want to mod a new TLB I only stepped in to do this as others seemed to be overworked. Since a few of the more vocal have gone elsewhere I don’t think there is much modding needed. There’s certainly a lot of admin that needs sorting, but not a great deal of modding now.

  19. I'm not having any issues with the site using tapatalk or chrome browser.

I think chrome may be blocking some pop ups

Well said. I’m sure the wealth of information would be a massive loss (yes I know we are actually a classic vehicle site) but it’s all the other stuff too. TLB seems to be one of a kind amongst forums, with the level of banter and friendship that it generates.
If it cost me a fiver a year to be a member, but meant the site would continue to exist, safely and securely, I’d be fine with that.
I know nothing of the words that @mikedjames and @grandmst use, computers just aren’t my thing, and I’m not having any issues as far as I’m aware (using tapatalk on my phone, and having just finally ditched Internet Explorer in favour of Microsoft Edge on my PC) but if other are, it will be good when it gets looked into tomorrow.
