Single or twin carbs?

  1. Hi

We're new bus owners. We're having a 1600 rebuilt for us by T2D as our bus didn't come with an engine.

I've seen pictures of engines with twin carbs. Should we be getting them to do this?

What's the benefits and negatives of this?

There are good, average and bad carbs. Generally Dells = good, Empi = bad, Webber = middle of the road.
Benefits are more power, can be better economy.
Negatives are can be worse economy.

  3. id go twin mate, will be slightly more in fuel but if you were to drive a single carb bus then a twin youd go twin i recon, gives you that little bit more uuumph to get out of trouble if you need it. more air in = more air and fuel mixture = more bang = more power, but not quite double lol!

Lots more oomph with Dells, Foot to the floor and drink petrol, drive like grandad and the consumption will improve (on a run).
Twin carbs give you the choice.
Weber ICT's are ok-ish, but Dells are the height of carburettor design with no expense spared.

  5. What sort of price difference is there between a Dell, Empi and Weber?

    Forget the Empi carbs.
Dells DRLA36 are perhaps 2x price of Weber ICT
You could also fit Weber IDF's which are very similar to and a bit cheaper than Dellorto DRLA but (I think) start at 40's so a bit big for your 1600.
Don't forget to price in the cost of air filters, manifolds and a linkage.
The overall cost depends on where you shop, if you get lucky with 2nd hand etc etc

  7. Whatever carbs you get you will need to factor in the cost of tuning and setting them up correctly for optimum performance. Rolling road sessions can be pricey.
You can save money by buying used carbs and end up plowing more cash in getting them set up than if you bought new or refurbed ones to start with.

  8. cant agree with this enough!! i payed 140 quid for rolling road, rejetting them, fixin low fuel pressure in the left card and it runs great now so defo factor in getting them set up correctly! money well spent for peace of mind though!!!

  9. ok that all makes sense.

  10. And as far as ive read some carbs are"copied" other chaps on here will know more re same, seems from what ive read the copies are poor attempt to produce a sought after item cheeply

Has anyone tried SUs rather than the usual suspects? Twin 1 1/2" might do the job and can be easier to set up than Dells/Webers etc.

  12. Probably cheaper to buy an MG :)

what are these old fashioned "carbs" you speak of? potatoes and the like? aren't all vans fuel injected

  14. Mine is. :D Soooo much easier. I even have a coil pack so no more points/condenser/distributor. :)

  15. Ive got the bog standard 34pict and bog standard zorst. Ive a set of twin 34ICT's and a Mondo Bugpack but havent fitted either yet. May not fit them either as I am beginning to come round to the idea of keeping percy standard as one knows where one is with a bog standard bus. Plus 55mph is fine for me, although i wouldnt mind a tad more hill oomph. As I live halfway up a steep hill.

The engine I've got came with FI, it's gone & I've got 2 40mm Kadrons on it instead, much better :p

i'm not gonna get too cocky - I imagine if and when mine goes tits up it will be a nightmare....

  18. Electronic fuel injection is my next purchase, if your modding your engine even slightly the mechanical cant cope!

I have a full set in anyone cares to make an offer!! ;-)

  19. Set of carbs or injection dude. Will they fit 1600 tp?

I wish mine had its original fuel injection as it's with a second specialist at the moment who is also struggling to cure a misfire. He, like me, thinks its fuel related and the problem maybe the rhs carb, supposedly a 34ICT Weber but I've noticed the manifolds are stamped Empi so it may have Empi carbs as well. Anyone recommend a single carb set up?
