Q. Whats the difference between a Long block engine and a Short block engine?

A long block has a cylinder head and valve's a short block doesn't

 

So they are supplied with the heads and valve's on.

And "turnkey" should have everything else fitted too

 

Whereas "turkey" doesn't work at all.

Not really applicable to the VW aircoolers, as most come with heads attached. For your old MG, you might buy a reconned short block (basically crankcase) and fit your own head.

Not your head, obviously. That would be silly.
