shrink wrap stuff - anyone used it-views on it

  1. Hi All,
need to tidy up wiring in engine bay as it has been butchered some time in the past so any ideas or tips greatly appreciated.
There has been an tow bar adapter cut into the wiring off the rear light clusters that needs to be taken back out...hell of a mess..also there is a split charge relay ( i think ) and leisure battery wiring that looks dodgy..just want to tidy area up and make safe ..then sort the LB out at a later date.

Have been told about this heat shrink stuff = anyone used it, any good? .. ... its all new to me ... sounds as though its a neat idea..

  2. Shrink wrap comes in various sizes depending how many wires your securing with it, I shrink it using a gas soldering iron, you have to be careful though as all can go up in smoke if your not concentrating...so have a fire extinguisher handy.

Dunno if there is a safer way to shrink it...maybe a super small hairdryer or summit?

If your not sure about it, use cable ties or those tidy wiring kits you get from the £ shop to tidy computer cables up.

Heat shrink is brilliant! make sure you put it far enough down wire beforehand before you start soldering, otherwise the heat whilst soldering will shrink it where you didnt want it!

As said use a heatgun, possibly a hairdrier to shrink, just dont get too keen when heating it , as has been mentioned it'll burn and get messy!

  4. Heat gun (carefully) or stroke it with a soldering iron.

  5. Different colours a well ...this is what its designed for ...

  6. An alternative for those averse to campervan bonfires is this:
    http://www.maplin.co.uk/spiral-cable-wrap-26849
which has the advantage that wires can be fed in and out at any point and you can undo it if you have to rework. Shrink stuff is good for sealing small joints but this stuff is the solution for longer runs of tidy wiring. And like all good TLB tips it's cheap.

  11. Great stuff, two types, with and without adhesive. I use without.
I use it to protect soldered connections and terminals, long lengths I use anaconda, easy to branch off from.
I have used a mini blow lamp but a heat gun is much better.
    Cheers

  12. I used a mini blow lamp once and ended up with a pile of molten plastic and the insulation melted of the wires i was supposed to be protecting.

  13. Cheers Guys,
thank you all, just what i wanted to hear...best get on ebay and order some ;)....just a quikie..anyone quickly tell me what sizes i'll need..roughly..cheers

  14. Shrinks down to about half diameter usually. I'd get about 1/3 larger diameter than what you need to wrap. You can get kits of sleeving from maplins with different sizes.
    Cheers
