Setting valves type 4 engine ...

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Daithi, Apr 26, 2017.

  1. I have 1800 pistons, cylinders and heads on my 1700 CA engine. This was done before I got it. Cylinder 3 wasn't firing due to a sunken valve seat. I got a replacement 1800cc head with valves fitted etc. but when I put it on I'm finding it impossible to set the valve gaps on that side. The rocker adjustment is completely screwed out. I took out the pushrods and they are 271mm steels. I wondered if they were causing a problem, maybe they don't fit as well as the aluminium ones in the solid lifters? But then there's no problem with setting the valves on the other side. My head is fried! Any helpful suggestions?

  2. cheers but they are the solid ones.

  3. What rocker gear are you using, the original from the damaged head or that from the new/replacement head.
    Are they the same ?
I could be wrong but I think it is possible to fit the rocker gear the wrong way round !!
The blocks on each end of the rocker gear, where the bolts go through to head are deeper one way round than the other.
    Maybe worth checking this

  4. I had a problem with the rocker on no. 4 not going out any further. Fixed this weekend at techenders by shimming the rocker block out thanks to Adam and mikedjames advice. Loads of adjustment. Can go as fast as I like now, anytime ... hot wheels to hell!

  5. Don't quote me on this !
The blocks that hold the rocker shaft are flat one side and slightly tapered the other.
The flat side goes against the head.

  6. Ratwell states aluminium rods are 271mm and 12mm diameter ...steel ones are 262mm and 10mm diameter ...so I can't see how you have 271mm steel ones ??

  7. Full story might be useful.

Are the pushrods you are using the ones you took out
Why are they steel and not ally
What are they on the other side
Why do you think its a 1800

  8. Definitely got the right TDC? Crank is there twice on each cycle..One of them looks close looking at the rockers but just holding both in a bit check dizzy arm location is pointing to firing the one your on.
