servo installation info needed

  1. The van is a 79 camper, it originally had a servo fitted then a previous owner removed the servo so i still have the mounting bracket. We want a servo fitted so that the wife can stop the vehicle as well so that we can share the driving.

I am getting an original servo, i do not know the integrity of the new unit but have been assured it worked when removed and so want to fit it.

Questions? how hard/difficult is it to fit, could an enthusiastic diyer do the job.

Is there a how to somewhere on the internet to explain the process. I know i will have to mount the servo, reroute/move some of my brake pipes, connect the vacuum pipe and bleed the brakes, what else? i will research it more than this

Or if it is too difficult for a diyer how many pennies would it cost roughly to get a proffessional to complete the job

    I've done this a few times. :)

The best way to buy one second hand is find one complete with the master cylinder and push-rod. Not just so it saves you hunting, but you know it's from a scrapped van and chances are it was still all working.

    What you need:
    The servo
A servo master cylinder and reservoir
pipe from top-up reservoir to servo reservoir and fittings
A brake push-rod (from pedal to servo).
Some brake pipe, ends and tools to make pipes up
    A vacuum line non-return valve.
About 1.5m servo vacuum pipe + clips.
Wire and spade connectors to adjust wiring to brake light switches

There may be more depending on your present engine.
    What engine?

  3. Hey Zed, what's the norm when it comes to obtaining some brake fluid hose with extra length to run between the dash reservoir and the master cylinder reservoir. As I've converted it to servo brakes and moved the master cylinder on to the axle further back than it was, the old feed pipe obviously isn't long enough. The outlets on the res's are roughly 11mm and I can't seem to find any brake fluid suitable hose in that bore that I can order a couple of metres of... Do you, or have you, used anything for this that you could point me in the direction of..? Much appreciated.
    Ta.

I have a brilliant place nearby that makes up and supplies hydraulic hose. I suggest you look for somewhere similar. On my early, the pipe is ali or steel (can't remember) but I joined it up somehow to the remnants of the pipe that came still attached to the M/c reservoir. I'll have a look next time I'm under the van...

  5. Thanks Zed, will look into any hydraulic component suppliers near the College.
