  1. put a smear of fresh oil on the rubber seal of the filter before you fit it
    ;)

  2. Will do, thats one thing I do remember from servicing minis 20 plus years ago, funny, I never used to think when I did my cars in the mid 80's now I think very carefully about things on the bus, think its because with the bus being 32 years old, I feel more attached to it!

Will probably take me all day to do the bus on Friday when I used to drop and replace the oil on a mini in 3/4 hour!

    Cheers

  3. Job done.

When I removed the oil strainer, there was no crud in it just a bit on the cover plate. One of the easier jobs done!

  4. we have the same engine , 2ltr and the same year as you ,79 and our tappet's are not hydraulic , i was told they changed some time in 1979

  5. Interesting! Anybody know how you know what you have and is it obvious?

  6. there is only one sure fire way of knowing if you have hydraulic lifters, and that's by removing one and examining it. You'll then spot straight away as it has a plunger, a seal and a hole in th side - its a little pump/plunger, not a solid lifter. Unless you know the van has its original engine, you know that the engine has never been mucked about with, then that is the only way you'll find out.

  7. Ours was august 79

  8. age and build date means squat unless you actually know what's inside hasn't been messed with. 9 times out of 10 if its been rebuilt hydraulic lifters will have been removed. Even if your build date and engine code indicates that it should have hydraulic lifters the only sure fire way of knowing its not been messed with is to pull a lifter and look at it. You need to know this before you start messing with your valve clearances
