Self Tappers?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by F_Pantos, Mar 16, 2019.

  1. I removed the front belly pan so I could route a wires for my new Tach, oil pressure and temp gauges up through into the dash.

This afternoon I started to put it back on and noticed only the three rear and one middle front bolts have captive nuts inside the frame. The side bolts are all self tappers which don't seem to do up very tight at all; there's at least two missing.

I found slightly bigger self tappers here:

    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FLANGED-...-12-14-/161837981265?var=&hash=item6b4a84ed05

The 14g size are 6.3 mm, whereas the ones I took off that aren't tightening measure 6mm.

I doubt the pan will fall off, but my OCD hates the idea of missing bolts.

Do VW do a part? Any thoughts, advice? Thanks.

    Put some riv-nuts in.

  3. That's not a bad idea.

The captive nuts take the same screws/ bolts as used on the tinware.
If the captive nuts are still there just use the correct bolts.

  6. From memory, the rear three are just large self-tappers (self-tappers are Imperial sizes converted to metric, so 6.3 may be right). The front one was originally a large self-tapping bolt, as I recall. You may need to try a larger (M8?) bolt to tap itself in, or as above a rivnut in the frame.

  7. It's fine on the ones where the captive nuts are present, just the two bolts on either side seem to have factory self tappers, well at least two of them did.

  8. That's good to know, thanks.

  9. Seems to be the side ones on mine, its the same on both sides, so I am guessing this is how it left the factory.

I might try some new self tappers first, by the time I buy a riv-nut tool, that solution is getting a tad expensive.

  10. Side ones on the front belly pan? Should be just three at the back, I reckon.

  11. Definitely side ones, stuck in the bolt and it didn't bite, I'll double check tomorrow. Did they change them, mines a cross-over.

  12. I could be loosing the plot, it was barely3 deg C in the garage and it was the last job of the day lying on a cold floor with limited headroom.

  13. I think you may have dreamt it ;)

  14. Seem to remember my side ones being like that , I had a cross over too

  16. I seem to remember side bolts as well , one at the front one at each side and 3 along the back .

    Sorry , self tappers ...

But then again i do have some bizzare dreams ..

  17. mine had self tappers that were too loose to tighten up properly, can’t remember what size but I Just sourced some a tad bigger, nice tight fit now.

  18. There is a mix of M6 bolts and 6.3mm hex head self tappers. Metric self tappers are not the same size as UK gauge number self tappers.

  19. Thanks for the diagram. I'll look for some new metric self tappers.
