Seems to be slowly expiring - HELP!

  1. I've reported on other threads that my 1700 auto seems to have a problem with the distributor ( not sure about the advance mechanism) I'm going to replace it with one with an electronic ignition to see if that cures it.
However, apart from being really painful from 18mph when it changes to second and through 26mph when it changes to third and only feeling happy above 35mph, the van drives OK.
I took her out for a warm-up run this morning and checked the ATF when I got back with the engine running and the shift in neutral. Level is about 2/3 towards the top mark, not dirty but with quite a few bubbles in it. Not really frothy, but noticeable bubbles. Is that normal?
Took her out just now on an errand of about four miles and she won't run on tick-over. The revs just quietly die, nothing sudden, she goes down to idle and just keeps going til the lights flicker and she conks out. Great fun at every junction and roundabout on the way home!
Apart from the dissy replacement, where to start looking? I'm rather losing confidence in my abilities to sort things. I could do with recommendations of a good engine and auto box outfit that can really check things out. Any ideas? I'm based in Suffolk.

  2. Just a thought, has any of the vac pipes come off or perished? Can you increase the tickover via the screw?

Check for air leaks and get your tappets checked.... Or is that valve clearance... Think its the same

  4. Increased the tickover with the screw last week checked the vac tubes at the same time. Seemed OK then. I'll check again.
I'm assuming you mean the vac tubes to the dissy?

  5. personally id get the dizzy refurbished by ignition solutions ....
