Seat Belts

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by yorkieman, Mar 3, 2013.

  1. I have currently no seat belts at all in my van and will definitely be fitting them but, does anybody know the rules for them? Where do I stand for adults, kids, young and old and in the front and rear?

    Thanks

  2. I need the same info too?? Thanks

  3. I have two lap belts in the rear but my bed is a 3/4. If you have full width bed you might get 3 belts in. If you want 3point belts, there should be a mounting point just under the rear side windows about halfway along.

  4. I have two three point belts and a lap belt on my full width bed.
I fitted them myself using belts from the Wolfsburg West in USA.
All the points were already welded in by VW at the factory, just had to find them under the vinyl, crud, linings etc etc and clean them out with a tap.
If seat belts are fitted then they must work, I believe the cut off date is 1972 but I'd check that.
Kids rules are common sense and it shouldn't matter what the MOT says, you should have them.

1965 is the cut off for seatbelts in the front, rears I think are 1982

  6. If you have a lap belt there is only one kids' seat that can be fitted with them - the Britax Eclipse.

I have a child seat in the back and would say the lap belt is more secure than the 3 point, I can pull the lap belt up very tight and the seat doesn't move

  8. I have a pair of spare brand new securon lap belts in boxes going spare and a pair of as new 3 point belts as well pm if of any interest.

  9. I realise this one is a "hot" question , but I'm asking it anyway>any you guys who have fitted your own seat belts ever called your ins. company and informed them of same ? <asked on the basis that in my opinion its a change/addition to bus fitting(s) and most policies ask/demand that any changes be notified and the potential(imo) for a helluva legal argument on a "point of contract" law, should in the event of seat belts so fitted by owner failing and claim by ins. company that they are not paying out as they were not informed of said fitting ?anyone?for myself >I would write to Ins.Co.re same and expect their answer in writing.(cos a phone call agreement is soo hard to prove, legally)

Surely in this case any repair would become a matter to inform the insurance, new tyres new brakes any welding work, who it was done by when etc.

  11. we have a maxi cosi which can be fitted with a lapbelt, and there's also the britax prince junior.

  12. A child under 3 cant travel in a vehicle without a seat belt xxx

But you would be surprised what some of the pillocks do actually do when travelling with 3 yr olds. We saw a Mum, with seat belt on, driving with a baby on her knee - no belt on the baby struggling to drive - wtf!!

  16. well Davidoft, yes and no ,fitting seat belts is not a repair , and seeing the most expensive Ins.Co. pay outs are when a person is so injured they will need life long 24 hour care ,and they usually contest the claim, including having seriously top end vehicle engineers submit reports re vehicle and refer to any work done by any person not officially qualified and yes in that your correct "welding not up to spec, tyres not prop. road/vehicle type rated" and on and on it goes ,Ins. company's first duty is to their shareholders ,example:my pal"s wife was involved in a serious RTC 7 years ago ,their kid is now perm. disabled as result , still not settled the case ,nowt to do with seat belts , still they argue, what peeps choose to inform their ins. co. is of course their business ,me ?tell them everything (off to write letter re fuelling up!)

A modification (to me) would be adding seatbelt mounts, not fitting belts to original mounts.
If I was doing the former I'd make a call to the insurers and ask the question.
