Screens out but what to do about this

  1. Quick visit to the local windscreen place and for 20 quid they used a special probe to inject sealant all the way into the seal - 10 minutes and it was sorted .

Exactly what I should have done before an amoeba based food-chain built up under there!
And I probably will when I've cleaned it all up. I paid a guy to do it once before and he made it look easy to deal with the 1/2 tube that squirted back out of the gap. I made a right pigs ear when I'd tried previously. What he did was continuously squirt glass cleaner at it and everything. It evaporates but before it does it stops the goo sticking to anything as he deftly caught and dealt with it using a plastic scraper thing. Still don't fancy it though!

  3. When I put non setting butyl rubber sealant under my windscreen rubber
I made a complete mess of it it squeezed out everywhere and stuck to the bodywork
Thankfully I found that heating oil(kerosene)
    Stripped it straight off

Yeah, it comes off again but I probably added an hour of cleaning up to his experienced 15 minute job. It's exactly why I paid someone to do it, to find out how, but I still don't fancy getting to that mess again, I probably used half a roll of blue paper towel.

Runny silicone sealant, like Mike our new face is just a bit off so always a corner uncovered somewhere after pushing seal around so filled in the last bits and glued it in place with this.. not seen any water dripping through like we used to

  6. The kerosene makes it wipe off like it’s nothing
I’d tried all sorts of other solvents I had at home and they didn’t do much
With the kerosene soaked into half an old t shirt it was cleaned up in next to no time

Before that I was in a right sticky mess I had no idea how I was going to get out of

  7. Butyl rubber is better as it doesn’t fully set so remains pliable plus if you use silicone your in for a world of hassle if you need to repaint in the future

The acrylic wipes off with a wet rag..
I think I used white spirit with the non setting stuff.

Got the van back from the body shop, looking really good now. They ended up spraying up the Pilar's and onto the roof to get it looking right

Next job was the headlining, I'm pretty much there now but Still needs a bit of fettling to get the creases out.

Top tip if you’re re sealing a stubborn seal. Same as I do with silicone joints in ceramic tiling, masking tape two inches wide on both sides of where you’re working. Mask up with lengths of no more than a foot or eighteen inches, fold one corner under itself on a 45’ at one end then overlap the next piece by a good inch or so. Insert your nozzle and squidge into the rubber gap but only do a bout three or four inches then pull out like a good catholic and gently pat down the rubber, just do this little bit first so you have an idea of how much to let it squeeze out so you don’t waste too much plus you’ll make less mess and the masking tape can handle that. Once you’re happy with the amount, get the whole screen done. Pat down and smooth off as required, if it’s acrylic, keep your tools clean and wiped maybe slightly damp using water, if it’s butyl or similar you may need white spirits or parrafin as mentioned before, surprised he said kerosene too ;) Next thing, is have a bin ready with no lid on and a bin bag in it. Take off the last piece of masking tape first, this is where you’re glad you’ve done it in small sections, plus this is where the piece doubled over on a 45’ allows you to pick up the tape strips easily a d well worth the effort for a nice quick neat job ,then lift it straight off and drop it straight in the bin as carefully as you can. :)
if it’s been on a bit of time, it’s well worth wiping out first with a decent damp rag that don’t drop stuff, if going spirit based, same again. :)

    Ozziedog',,,,,,,,,,,,nice neat job, and clean
