Scooby conversion so should I take out fire extinguisher?

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by Sick Boy, Nov 5, 2013.

  1. I am in the process of getting my engine converted to a Subaru. I have just bought a Fireboy automatic fire extinguisher - should I sell it? Or do Subarus also catch fire?

I think you could lose it John if your engine fitter secures all the fuel lines.

  3. It's not the VW engines which catch fire!!

It's the close proximity of fuel tank, old fuel filler pipes, heat which causes the fuel pipes to perish and poor maintenance which causes fire.

If you're not going to change your approach to routine maintenance of this nature them keep the extinguishers
    :)

Here's a better idea, put an aircooled back in and keep the fire extinguisher

  6. Sick boy, are they keeping your gear box or does it need to be replaced with your new engine.

  7. ^this. VWs not really more prone to catching fire than other stuff, unless they're badly maintained.

  8. I am keeping the current gearbox and hopefully it will be ok - we'll see

  9. So, in the vernacular of current youth, your van is now sicker!

  10. If you do flog it let me know:)

  11. I will flog it - it is nearly brand new with the LED and electrics etc still unopened in wrapper. I paid £175 for it as part of the Late Bay group buy deal - will sell for £100

I had a subaru engine fitted, then fitted the firetec system - agree with the above it's not engine specific a fire, though I seem to remember that the magnesium case is harder to put out (probably a myth) on VW engine - but would imagine that the damage done at that stage is huge anyway.

I look at it like this - belt and braces is no excuse not to wear pants.

  13. Just leave a coolant hose clip loose, and the resultant fine mist of water will stop any fire starting

just remember, electric wiring can still short and burn, the downside of any rear engine/electric items are you're sat in front so will not see the 1st signs of a problem from in front of it, are you really that short of £100.......
