Rythmic thumping sound

  1. Whilst away on our hols we noticed a rythmic thumping soung when I turned right. initially I thought it was comming from the front and was something catching as the sound speeded up along with road speed.

I took the front right wheel off and tightened the bearing slightly but the sound is still present. It seems to be only when turning right and accelerating.

It has been suggested the cv joint which makes sense due to the correlation of the noise to speed and the fact it happens when accelerating.

Does anyone else have any ideas and if it is the CV joint is it likely to be the right one due to it happening when turning right?

  2. my left hand cv joint is clicking/knocking and it`s only when i turn left so i`d have thought it would be the same for you.

    must sort that out!

  3. Might be CVs if it's coming from the rear, but...check your (ancient) tyres. I had a mysterious thumping/lurching that took me ages to find. Turned out to be the tread from one of the rear tyres about to seperate...

I'd imagine many happy campers are driving around on 10-15-year old tyres - this is not good.

  4. Im fine with tyres they are virtually new so Im still thinking its the cv joint. Just want to sus out which one it is if it is the joint. Gonna take it for a run tomorrow and try and nail it down so I can order parts required to fit before RTTH ;D

  5. Zed

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

Look underneath - are any of the CV boots split?

  6. I replaced a cracked cv boot on the nearside about a year ago but the joint was ok at the time.. Will have a look at them today . I wonder if that one got some dirt in before I put the new boot on and so the damage began ::)

  7. try driving rounda carpark slowly on full lock

that`s when mine is worse. I checked mine again yesterday and i can also feel play in it when i try twist the driveshaft forwards or backwards

  8. I had something similar when turning left on my RHD. The end of the steering damper had sheared off and so on full lock it was knocking against the linkage arms.

  9. Last sunday i too had a rhythmic thumping sound. It was quickly followed by the rear nearside wheel coming off. MORAL: check that youve tightened your wheel nuts.

Fortunately the rear arch kept the wheel 'on' and the hubcab saved my nuts.

  10. Been at it all day today!! :( Took it out into carparks and roundabouts and couldnt re create the sound we had while on hols!! :(

Pressed on and found the offside rear bearing was shot and the offside rear cv joint(near to the wheel) had been worn to a level I have never seen before!!

Had already anticipated this and had bought 2 cv joints and a bearing so have spent the WHOLE!!! day replacing them!!!!!

Test drive seems to show I have hit the nail on the head but I will hold my breath for now!! ::)

I now have a cv joint in spare ready for the next issue so all in all a good result!!! (SOOOOOOOOO FAR!!!) ;D ;D

  11. Alls well that ends well then dude

Good to see a problem resolved (hopefully).

  13. Well done but you should have recorded that thumping sound - sent it to Marowak for a recording contract!!
