Rusty floor, replace or patch?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Hillbillyfam, Dec 7, 2014.

  1. So, while under the camper cutting out what's left of the sills I had a bit of a poke around at the floor. Low and behold it's been bodged.:(

One of the PO have welded in a piece of steel over dodgy parts in the floor, leaving the rusted Floor in place, and often masticing between the 2.
My question is should I replace the floor or repair the dodgy sections- basically anything with nothing there or where there's a patch-the rest of the floor is in ok condition.
Either way who does the best repair panels?
Next question is re the bulkhead, someone has repaired it with a piece of flat steel, will this affect the structural integrity?
    Thanks in advance

Depends how much time and money you have, you can buy floor sections for around £40 easy to fit quick and perfectly good or buy a complete quality (£500 ish) and a few days/ a week to replace, flat sheet on the bulk head is fine

  3. I would give your sills a good check over too, it's unlikely that they will be in good nick with a floor that bad, my floor wasn't anywhere near as gone as that and needed sills and front tophat doing.

  4. go with schofield if your going to patch it .

  5. Thanks for the replies.
Sills are being replaced, they are knackered as is top hat section

  6. if your doing the sills and top hats renew the floor, will make life so much easier

  7. What's the best way to go, completely remove the sills and replace the whole piece(s)? Or but up to the good steel that is there in the sills?

  8. If the sills and top hats need replacing then id pull that floor out as it will make your life so much easier
Unless the rot in your sills is small and localised then complete new sills is the best approach

    Whats your inner sills like?

I had this rot on the sill
    [IMG]

Opened it up to find this

So it was worth repairing instead of a whole new sill

As the sill wasent in need of replacment and the top hat only needed a repair

A section of repro floor was a good enough repair

Anything worse than this i would have removed the entire floor done the repairs and then fitted a new floor
New floors are only available in lhd but can be adapted to fit rhd busses

  9. How hard is it to modify the lhd floors for rhd?

  10. Alan does a conversion piece to make a lhd floor to rhd
But as far as im aware no one stocks a complete rhd floor

Its been a while since i browsed the panels catalouges
    @davidoft will know im sure

  11. Not hard at all if you buy the conversion piece

Do you have a resto thread?
If not get one up with loads of pics all over then we can really help you with the best approach
Also your budget, experiance and time scale will effect the approach

Dont be ashamed of the state of your bus as from pictures
The advice given from people on here that do this day in day out to earn there crust is worth its weight in gold

If your replacing the usual bad rotten bits on a bus you can spend a lot of money and time only to have to back track later

  12. @brothernumberone has a restoration manual thats well worth its money
I only wish it was available when i started my resto

Not aware of one, I usually cut one side and weld it to the other

I made this piece to fill the gap on the last floor I did

  16. Thanks for the advice everyone

My inner and middle sills are knackered- think tapping the sill and your fingers disappearing. Except for the very top section which is solid.
I think i got my terminology a bit mixed up, the top hats and jacking points are surprisingly solid. Ive poked, prodded, and sanded back in some areas to check, its the floor supports that are shagged.
Is it at all possible to replace the sills with the top hat/jacking points in place?

  17. Cheers Para!:)
How bad is the rest of the floor? You're best off keeping as much as the original floor as possible because the original metal is better then the available new stuff, even the vw brazil sections.
If it's just that bit round the step which is a complicated pressing, I'd be tempted to buy half a floor which costs about £150 I think. LHD isn't an issue on that side for uk vans, you just have to trim down a larger panel. All the pressings are the same.
If the floor is going in several places it might be worth doing the whole thing.

  18. Its really only by the step, and next to the wall on the far side, the rest is ok from what I can make out so far.

  19. before you chop up the sill, be aware that the middle sill with the sliding track (from memory) is either not available, or a really bad fit

you can use the replacement middle sill to repair yous, you will need to save the top part of the middle sill and weld any repairs onto that, as you wont find anything with the correct upper profile for the sliding door runner track area
