Rusting hub caps - how to protect

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by D and G, Mar 8, 2012.

  1. Hi all, I bought some hub caps in October and they have rusted already, I have autosol'ed them to get them back to some sort of condition but not sure what to do to continue to look after them, and even if it is worth it once the rust has got in.

My options I was thinking of was either cover them in wd40, spray them with lacquer, wax them, or take all the chrome off and spray them a plain colour ??

    Any help much appreciated

  2. You could lacquer or wax, short term. Re chrome is best option for long term.

Or drill a hole and put a chain through and wear as a medallion on an open shirt!

  3. If they are the cheaper Brazilian hub caps, then they will rust. All I'd do is coat the inside with clear waxoil, and keep the rust at bay with regular polishing.

  4. I use meguires metyl (yes its spelt that way on the tub)polish on chrome fixtures

Ive found nothing better over the years to use as a final polish plus protectant

So id suggest autosol to remove the bulk of the mess then the meguires for final polish and protect

Dont forget to brush waxoyl cavity wax on the unseen rear of the hubcaps

  11. A trick my Grandad taught me - smear the inside with a coating of Vaseline. When you have polished the outside, polish it again with Vaseline. Not too much as you'll get crap sticking to it, you want a light film polished into it, that's all.

    Nice and cheap
