Rust under window rubbers

Discussion in 'Restorations' started by Andy-M, Apr 8, 2020.

  1. Afternoon guys and girls. Hope you are all keeping safe...
I am replacing my window rubbers and I've found this rust underneath the old rubbers. What's the best way to stop this from getting any worse??
Any tips or suggestions before I put the new rubbers in? M
    TIA..[IMG][IMG]

Clean it up and get some rust converter on it. my rust converter of choice is Bilt Hamber "Hydrate 80" (there are others out there).

As a converted panel van, these can suffer quite badly with rot around the window rubbers, for a proper job you need to get under the painted edges that have lifted, cleaning back anything loose, then treat with something that tries to encapsulate the rust and stop it reacting further... a big job, involving repainting etc.

For a quicker and not so thorough job, that might hold off the inevitable for a while, carefully paint some rust treatment stuff on the exposed bits, be careful to avoid the paintwork as it will stain. Let it dry, then put the windows back in, and worry about it in a couple years time!

  4. Yes, it is a converted panel Van. She's a '73 Holdsworth...
Yeah, I know it will need a bit more work, but I'll get her water tight and plan on doing it properly next year. Thanx

    What a shame.
Maybe just keep doing it every year or two and it would last for a long time?
I find most paint has two annoying properties. It doesn't fill pits and it runs away from sharp edges like they have the plague. I know it's only 0.8mm thick but it might be worth rounding the edges with a fine file to get better paint coverage.

  6. Thanx Zedders When Holdsworth first done the conversion, they obviously don't finish the body work off when they first cut the windows. The edges were sharp in some places and they certainly didn't do any kind of rust treatment or paint the fresh cut edge before firing them. That's prob why, as Kruger said, converted Vans suffer from rust around the windows. The rubbers I'm taking out are so brittle they must be the originals so I'm surprised the rust isn't worse. But in a year or two, I'll have all the windows or again and have it all done property with a respray.

  7. I've used waxoyl on my window rubbers when fitting windows to stop / halt corrosion. Some say they can make the rubbers rot. Never had any problems myself.

All done with tin snips, Devons are the same, I assume to avoid grinding spark damage, mess, easier to mob hand the job. Yours has been painted since then (paint on the side cover bead) which I why I thought it a shame - the rest of the paint looks great.

If that damage is hidden by the rubbers, it would be worth quite a bit of effort to keep your treating and repairing within that stripe. Once you start painting odd bits that are always visible it does generally show.

  9. Yep as said before clean up rusty edges as mutch as possible being carefull not to go past paint line that shows, Maybee rust converter then paint some etch primer on with a small craft pencil paint brush, and maybee blue top coat on top, hopefully it will all be hidden under rubbers anyway

  10. She has been blown over, not long before i got her last September, and it's such a shame that it was a real cheap job. It really wouldn't have been hard to take the Windows out before it was sprayed. But luckily, the new runners are fresh and just a little bit bigger than the old shrunken ones, so they are overlapping the new and old paint line. I've done two Windows and they have come out really well. Rust treated the other two, ready for fitting the rubbers tomorrow.
While i had the window out of the sliding door, I took the opportunity to take the door off and strip, clean and regrease all the door runners and locks. I can't believe the difference!!
So, new rubbers in tomorrow, and then it's onto the Devon poptop... Got new deal Kitt for that too, but that's another story..

  11. As others have said, wire brush and rust treat. I use Vactan rust treatment and had very good results with it even without overpainting. Think it's only available online direct fron manufacturer though.

Also make sure you're not tempted to use washing up liquid in any form when putting rubbers back, the salt will accelerate any corrosion!

  12. I had heard about NOT using washing up liquid before, and it was suggested car wash shampoo was the thing to use

  14. A mate who fitted heavy plant windows on site when they got broken recommended Windowlene glass cleaner - best and easiest fitting `stuff` i`ve used to be honest ...

  17. Well, that's that job done!!
New rubbers on the side Windows, rear window and tail gate rubber. Just letting the rubbers relax a bit before going of the excess... Found quite a bit of rust under the rear window rubber in the two bottom corners. Rust treated and cleaned up, but it's a repair to do next year...
Going to order a complete cab door window seal kit too, so they'll be nice and water tight too.

So next job on the list???.. Devon Poptop refurb!!
