Rotten door cards = leaky window seals. Advice on replacement

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by bootsam, Aug 29, 2011.

  1. Ive just fitted a new audio unit to replace the old piece of rubbish that was previously installed. (not original please relax :) ). An Alpine CD128R, works really well with iphone and ipod. I also fitted door speakers, a couple of 6" 50W alpines. Whilst fitting i realised my drivers side door card is manky. Really manky. Found some new rust too on the door bottoms, not much but enough for me to treat asap. Anyhoo ive got to replace the window seals. Ive looked at them and they are fatigued to the point of useless at keeping the rain out.

I am after some tips on their replacement. Lizzie at Delilah's is making us a new card set as i type and i want to replace these seals quickly. Is it straightforward and what do i need to look out for. Are there any hidden screws or other pitfalls that i should aviod. Is there a how to? Pray tell.

Also hi to the red/white late bay spotted going nrth on A22 28/08. I couldnt get to the flasher quick enough. Hi to the pastel blue LB seen on Madiera drive Brighton too, oh and the sage bay LB also seen on A22. :D Lord Percy was the bottle green/white bay heading sth to brighton.

Window seals don't keep water out of the doors. Water drains out through the door, that's why there are drain holes in the bottom.
There should be a membrane to stop your door cards getting soggy.

  3. Thnx BS. That was indeed missing. Thats sounds a lot easier to replace. Karma 2 u. :D

    Hi Boots,

some people stick a polythene sheets as a barrier to the door before the door card is fitted to stop the water penetrating the panel :)

    Be in touch soon!!

  10. Thnx. Ive got some sheet from the local hardware store. Plus ive plenty of ductape. ;D

  11. also pva the back of the door cards , this keeps the moisture out

  12. I can't find it now but im sure you can buy the plastic door covers pre measured etc so you can just stick them on without trying to fart about catting plastic sheets...

i believe they were on ebay.... for about £4?

  13. thats the ones...

they were easy to fit with sticky sealant ! when i did mine.....

just put the sealant on the door and then carefully place the sheet over, allows you to adjust it a bit to get it right as well - so may be better than sticky tape....

    ah that's a good idea!

  15. as already said, the seals are not to seal water out, they are window scrapers.
the membranes need to be fitted with a water proof adhesive that is also removable, butyl rubber is perfect. tape can lose its its stick after time.
the back of the door panel can be coated in clear varnish to keep the moisture out
the inside of the doors need to be treated with waxoil or similar and make sure the drain holes dont get blocked
i am in the process of doing a "how to" on this subject, just waiting for my panels to come back

  16. ^^^ WHS
Put the new door card on the polythene sheet & mark the shape in felt pen (dont get it on your new door card)
Cut about 5 mm inside this line all the way around it.
Take it outside on the grass & spray one side of it with spray adhesive (the side that will face the door not the card)
Be careful it doesn't blow away or it will stick to the grass dirt or what ever it comes into contact with. Stick it on to the door carefully. Get a hot soldering iron (an old Philips screw driver with the tip heated up on the gas ring will do) & poke out every hole carefully where the screws & door clips go.
The door is only held on with 2 or 3 screws in the centre depending what model you have.
Use new clips & new clip rubber seals & line them all up before whacking them in with the palm of your hand.
Its a good idea to clean the drain holes in the bottom of the door while the card is off, wach your fingers mind on broken glass etc. Then coat the inside with Ankor wax or Waxoyl.
If I was you I would mix up some PVA glue & water about 25% water to 75% pva & paint the back of the door card, this will give it a moisture seal & stop it buckling in the future. :)
