Hi folks ...the much talked about issue with poor quality rocker cover gaskets . In the past i bought a load off Paul weeding which he imported from the USA and were a thicker and wider and i never had any problems of leeks . I have now run out and need to check my valve clearance ...So apart from getting in touch with Paul again . My question is from the expieriance on peeps on here , who supplies the best quality gaskets . I have had some in the past which looked feeble and did find that they leaked but can't remember if it was JK or VWH . thanks Ewan .
The ones I’ve had from JK have been Elring! Not saying they are better or worse than any others. I believe they aren’t wide enough. Leading to snaking on the mating surface and subsequent leaks!
If they snake it can be because actually they are being squeezed slightly on the outside at the ends. A job for Hylomar to stick the gasket to the cover first.
Thats what i have always done ...keeps it in place ...i have found if i don't it moves more so if your bales have good tension .The fatter they are the less likely .
Yep , a dab of Hylomar As an aside , see that tangy thingy ? Bend it 45 degrees away from the head , I had a very annoying rocker seal leak on a brand new VEGE recon which took me months to cure . Turned out to be the tang very slightly touching the head and stopping the cork seal seating . Maybe VEGE used a good thicker gasket and I just fitted what was available in Greece - dunno but that was the problem sorted Be interesting to pop it on a head and see how close it is to touching whilst you've got the engine out - piccy please ! Dunno how you manage that! Literally never happens to me but I am very careful placing the cover and I do not slide it about to get it in the right place. If I miss, I start again. Likewise if I think I've hit a rocker on the way in I take it off and check the gasket hasn't moved then start again. It's all about getting the cover onto the head in a straight line... and my gaskets are not as wide as yours either! I stick 'em on with a very thin smear of grease, I think if you use too much you're asking for it to squidge out and it's likely to take the gasket with it because the gasket is then floating in a grease bath. If I had that trouble I'd superglue the gasket to the cover like my mini racing mate does so he can whip the cover off and back on without worrying about the gasket.
May just try the hylomar route. No biggy. I don’t usually get them wrong. That ones actually been off and on a couple of times to be fair
I F'd it up the first time I did it 25 yeas ago and the bathed my new heat exchangers with oil! First and last time I let that happen.
