    Hello

I’ve replaced the rocker cover gaskets many times on T1 engines with never any bother.

Just done the same job for someone with a 2.0 T4 motor as it was leaking and I’ve made the leak worse.
Am I missing something? Is there something different than the technique used for replacing the ones on a T1? or common mistakes or helpful tips?
I just used standard gaskets (with no sealant) from GSF. The same as I always do on a T1 engines The clips on both sides are nice and stiff (ooh matron!).
    Cheers

  4. Are they the original rocker covers not the aftermarket chrome ones as they do leak.
Also i had some gaskets a while ago not sure if they were JK or veewee but the fit was poor, they went straight in the bin.
I use a couple of blobs of grease to keep them in place, then hold the cover firmly in place while flipping the clamp on. Don’t let the cover move.
Also although they look pretty identical there is a correct way up for the covers

  5. Make sure the clip is in its pivot points properly, that all is clean on the mating surfaces and that the baskets are straight. I just grease both sides. No sealant mine finds other places to leak but rocker covers aren’t usually a problem. Once the clips are in place properly I usually just check that all is lined up properly!

Ah. That's probably it. Although they are original covers. It was hard not to let them move about while clamping them down as it's such a tight clamp with a lot less elbow room than on a t1 engine. Also I think that on a 1600 they only fit on one way up (?) Is there a way of telling which is the right way up on a t4 cover? Some sort of orientation mark?

The original gaskets are quite a bit thicker than what's available from the usual's ....Paul Weeding used to buy bulk from the states and sell to us all , as they have good thick ones .
Only got one set left now .

  9. The VW sign upside down!

It's on the inside.. and really clean mating faces and we usually add a small smear of grease to hold it in place, the Elring ones seen to be fine so far

You are my hero! Exactly what I was looking for. The bent bit top right or top left corner?

  13. Bent bit goes top right when it's on and looking straight at it

  14. That’s a good point about the logo being upside down. I’d forgotten that!

  15. I didnt notice it above, but make sure the bales are nice and tight - give them a bit of a pre-bend to ensure they really hold down tightly. I find I need to lever them on and off with a pry bar or screwdriver and they dont leak at all.

  16. ...and if you don't need to swear at it while pulling on the rope around the bale with your foot on the cover to hold it in place it's not tight enough ;-)

The bales .. don't they push up to close ... pull down to release?

Victor Reinz or Elring cork gaskets should be okay, cheap ones from GSF, JK, VWH etc are too thin, too narrow and too coarse - IMO. Silicone are best but have been on two weeks delivery from C&C for the last six months or so – they keep promising me they’ll have them next week. https://www.customandcommercial.com...one_rocker_cover_gaskets_1700cc-2000cc_36575/

Sealant shouldn’t be necessary and only on the cover if you have to.

  20. Yes but I've found the bales also have to be on the right way with the bends pointing upwards. I suspect if you turned them round then you'd be going down to close. Would this be as effective, I don't know.
