Road tax exemption extended to 1974

  1. Hi, is anyone here aware of this? Just found this article on Honest John which states that the cut off year has been moved from 1 Jan 1973 to 1 Jan 1974........ and that we might be moving to a 25 year rolling cut off period. http://classics.honestjohn.co.uk/ne...3/classic-car-ved-exemption-extended-to-1974/
No good for me yet as Violetta is a 1975. Although I understand that if you look at the chassis number it might prove when the manufacture date was which might be earlier than it was registered. Then you can apply for van to registered as a Historic vehicle. Worth looking into!

  2. Yeah mines a 79 and by the time free tax comes round for me (if it does continue to be rolling) I wont be able to afford the petrol anyway :(

  3. But its great news for the owners who were so close previously ,free short holiday a year on the government

  4. It has been discussed previously in another thread and highly unlikely they would move to a 25 year rolling cut off period as this would mean too many vehicles will suddenly become tax free including yours, I think we would be lucky if they had a rolling 40 year cut off period!

  5. Yeah I meant a 40 year rolling period ,sorry

  6. Yeah you're right just re-read the article and it says 40 years. Oh well only 2 more to go. That's if I haven't thrown in the spanners by then as still having trouble getting mine to maintain it's timing for any reasonable time. Despite having my tappets loosened. Very nice too - didn't notice a thing.

  8. In Europe classic tax exemption is only of the vehicle is stock ( so I'm told) so bigger engines, lowering etc wouldn't count for vehicle exemption. Many believe that this is the way the uk will go eventually.

  9. Very interesting although if it did become a rolling 40 year exemption I've still got a bout 6 years to wait - mine being a '78. You'd think that they would make that announcement clear if that was going to be the case...

  10. If it does, then I'll change the vehicle classification of ours back to private/light goods. Free tax is nice, but at the end of the day, it's a drop in the ocean compared to all the other money we spend on our buses, maintaining, fueling, restoring, etc.

The guy in the post office yesterday was adamant that it wouldn't become 40 year rolling exemption but not sure how he'd know?
I'm not bothered either way. I just intend to use it as much as humanly possible this summer before getting an engine conversion in Octoberish. Then next year I'm going to bat around Europe in it.
    Happy Days!

  12. Bat around Europe - now how lovely that sounds. I'd be grateful if I could bat around my home town without coming to a halt somewhere. Give me strength...... now repeat this mantra after me 'I won't let my van get the better of me'

  13. I suspect that they aren't prepared to commit to a rolling period, but maybe just announce it a year at a time.... if they feel like it..... and the wind is in a certain direction.... and the planets align..... and they didn't get cut up on the way to work in the morning.

But I think its safe to say no-one knows, we can just keep our fingers crossed that it keeps going.
