Revs too high on 1600

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Sick Boy, May 7, 2013.

  1. My Type 1 1600 with single Solex carb Pict 34 revs at idle at about 1600 rpm. I tried to decrease this by adjusting the Idle speed screw but having turned it all the way in I still can't get this lower than about 1500 rpm. Apart from this the engine starts and runs fine. Any thoughts on what I should do to decrease the revs?

Main one is that the adjuster on the throttle arm is set so it has a slight gap when warm (many people use this screw to adjust tickover)
Also check that the choke is coming right off.
and another cause could be advanced timing

  4. Thanks for both these quick replies. Will check out all of this. Funny thing with regard to the 'Advanced Timing' possibility - I have just bought a fancy Accuspark timing gun with rev counter and advance but the light does not flash. I contacted Accuspark who told me to ensure the arrow was pointing at the spark plug. It was but still no light although the rest works ok. Is this a common issue with these lights?

  5. With most timing guns just clip the sensor on lead 1 and then attach the gun to your battery and start the engine (minding not to get leads, fingers, hair etc... In the drive belt) it should just then flash, or flash when you pull the trigger?

Sounds like advance too much, don't you adjust the air screw for idle rather than the idle stop screw?

    Good luck

Check you get some light or indication when you pull the trigger, like display or neon on the timing gun, you might have got the battery leads the wrong way round..

The inductive pickups can be a bit difficult - I found that clipping on some way from the distributor helps - and get the arrow right way round.

Timing advance and air leak on carburettor throttle spindle may all combine to give difficult idle setting. I also had a jammed choke spindle caused by someone hammering the brass bushes in, making that stiff and the little spring loaded stepped throttle opening piece jam in one position rather than dropping back as the choke came off.
Sometimes that led to half-throttle idling and black exhaust pipes and rear bumper.

Thats why I gave up on that carburettor and started another difficult relationship with a progressive.

[And at least you dont have like my old setup with a bare spring on the end of the wire from the timing gun which you stuffed in the end of No1 lead and the hole in the distributor. I went for the carburettor idle setting and the reverse karate chop when I hit the live HT lead with my hand resulted in me ripping off one of the clips holding on the wiring harness across the top of the engine bay.]
